In the 18 years of publishing the rankings, 2024 is the first year that Hoi An ancient town has topped the list of the world's cheapest long-haul destinations for British tourists, surpassing Bali (Indonesia), Penang (Malaysia) and Phuket (Thailand).

The Post Office's Global Holiday Money Report is an annual event published for the past 18 years, ranking 40 global travel destinations from cheapest to most expensive.

The Post Office's ranking of destinations is based on the average price of eight popular travel items in 40 tourist cities around the world.

These essentials include a cup of coffee, a beer, a can of Coca-Cola, a bottle of water, a tube of sunscreen, a bottle of insect repellent, a three-course dinner for two and a bottle of wine.

According to the report, the average spending on the above 8 items by each tourist when coming to Hoi An is estimated at about 64 USD.

A liter of beer in Hoi An costs just $1.50, a can of Coca-Cola is $1, a tube of sunscreen costs $4 and a three-course dinner for two costs $50.

Second place goes to Cape Town (South Africa). The South African capital was knocked off the top spot in 2023 due to a 5% price increase, bringing the average cost of shopping to $68.

Third place belongs to Mombasa city (Kenya) with an average cost of shopping for listed items of 69 USD.

Tokyo (Japan) rose four places compared to 2023 and ranked fourth, after costs fell sharply by 16.2% to $74.

The Algarve city (Portugal) is the only European destination to make the top 5, with an average cost of shopping services of 75 USD.

At the bottom of the list, the city named the most expensive destination in the world is the town of Tamarindo (Costa Rica), with an average price of about 170 USD, followed by New York City (USA).
