In recent days, many people have expressed surprise at sky-high electricity bills in June, in some cases double or even triple the previous amount.

Ms. Bui Thi Minh Chau ( Hanoi ) said that normally her family of 3 uses more than 1 million VND in electricity each month, the most is only about 1.5 million VND. However, in June, her family had to pay nearly 2.1 million VND. "This is the highest electricity bill ever, which surprised and shocked me," Ms. Chau said.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan (Hanoi) was also startled when she checked her electricity bill and saw that this month's electricity bill had increased by more than 500,000 VND. "I just paid more than 2 million VND for electricity, while last month it only cost 1.5 million VND. I don't understand why it increased so much, while my family's daily life is still the same, without any major changes. I wonder if it is due to the impact of the 4.8% increase in electricity prices," Ms. Lan wondered.

On many social networking groups, members are also buzzing about their unusually high electricity bills. Nickname Dang Xuan said that in the past 3 months, his family's electricity bill has been steadily increasing by around 300,000 VND per month. Before March, his family used more than 600,000 VND per month. In April, it increased to over 900,000 VND, then to 1,200,000 VND in June.

“The family was using an infrared stove and had to switch to a gas stove, but the electricity bill kept skyrocketing. Not to mention, the family was already using a lot of solar energy, so it wouldn’t be any harder,” this person complained.

Member Huong Bui also said: "On average, my family uses 900,000 - 1,400,000 VND for electricity each month. However, the bill for June jumped to more than 2.6 million VND even though there are only 3 of us, mother and children, and one of us is always out. When we called the electricity company, they said that every year there is one month with such a fluctuation...".

Nickname Hoang Le complained that his family's bill had never exceeded 1 million VND, but now it has jumped to 1.5 million. "My family is often away. I know that June is very hot, so we use air conditioning more often, but last month we also used air conditioning and it wasn't that high."

Many people also expressed the opinion that the electricity industry needs to publicize the calculation method and tools for calculating electricity bills online to make information more transparent and easier to understand. At the same time, the progressive price list should be reconsidered because it can easily cause bills to skyrocket during peak months, while this is an inevitable need of people in hot weather, not due to lack of awareness of saving electricity.

What does the electricity industry say?

Responding to this issue, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Dung, Head of Business Department (Vietnam Electricity Group - EVN) said that in May, the total electricity consumption nationwide was about 28.6 billion kWh, an increase of 2% over the same period. Hot areas such as Hanoi, Nghe An, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang... all had household electricity consumption increase by over 30 - 40%.

In June, the total system's electricity output compared to May and the same period last year increased slightly, in which the electricity output of the residential area also decreased slightly.

“Therefore, customer feedback on sharp increases in electricity bills needs to be assessed based on the usage of each individual, not everyone is subject to increased electricity bills. EVN is ready to consider and explain specifically and thoroughly so that customers can understand, if customers have specific and direct questions,” said Mr. Dung.

For more information, Mr. Vo Quang Lam, Deputy General Director of EVN, said that recently, there have been some customer complaints about the sudden increase in electricity bills in June. To ensure complete and widespread information, EVN has requested power corporations to review and provide transparent and timely information on cases where electricity output or payment amounts have increased abnormally in this billing period and promptly explain clearly to customers.

Units need to provide full information on electricity consumption during the billing period, clearly explaining how to calculate the bill - especially for households using electricity for domestic purposes.

Meanwhile, Hanoi Electricity Corporation (EVNHANOI) said that the average temperature in Hanoi in June increased by 2 - 6 degrees Celsius compared to May. In particular, during the peak hot days in early and mid-June, the outdoor temperature reached 41 degrees Celsius, the actual felt temperature even reached 52 degrees Celsius.

Prolonged high temperatures not only affect daily life but also increase the demand for electricity, especially cooling devices such as air conditioners, fans and refrigerators. This situation causes a sharp increase in electricity consumption across the city, especially in residential areas.

According to statistics from EVNHANOI, the average daily electricity output in Hanoi in June reached more than 90 million kWh, an increase of 12% over the same period in 2024. The total output in June reached approximately 2,700 million kWh, of which the peak was recorded on June 2 with 110.9 million kWh, the highest since the beginning of the year.

The group of customers belonging to the residential consumption management segment alone accounted for more than 59.5% of total output, an increase of 15% compared to May. This reflects the direct impact of weather on electricity usage behavior in households.

“In particular, when students' summer vacation coincides with the peak of the heat, it leads to continuous use of air conditioners and electrical equipment day and night,” the electricity supplier explained.

High temperatures not only increase the frequency of electricity use, but also make cooling devices consume more energy to maintain operating efficiency. When the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors is large, the air conditioner must operate continuously, with few interruptions, leading to increased electricity consumption even though the usage time remains unchanged.

In addition, EVNHANOI said that the adjustment of retail electricity prices from May 10 with an increase of 4.8% at all levels was also a factor causing the electricity costs of households in June to increase.

The Central Power Corporation also recommends that after receiving the June electricity bill notice, if customers feel that the bill has increased unusually and need to check the data again, they can contact us for support.

"Electricity units commit to checking and reviewing meter data, reading schedules, and related factors to ensure the accuracy of the bill. After the inspection process, the electricity units will have specific feedback and answer questions for each customer case," said Central Power.
