Coach Ricardo Gareca leaves the Chilean team after a disappointing performance against Bolivia. |
Chilean Football Association (ANFP) president Pablo Milad confirmed that "the journey with Ricardo is over" after the team picked up just 10 points from 16 matches, finishing bottom of the group. A home defeat to Bolivia ended any hopes of qualifying for the World Cup.
Gareca himself announced his resignation at a post-match press conference in El Alto. The Argentine coach said he had spoken to Chilean officials about his decision and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity given to him by the team.
The 67-year-old coach has led Chile in 13 matches since taking charge in early 2024, including Copa America and World Cup qualifiers, but has only won once, against Venezuela. The Chilean team has lost eight and drawn four during this period.
Chile previously missed out on the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Their last appearance was in Brazil in 2014. They reached the round of 16 in 2014, but have since fallen out of favour as a major South American team.
After Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal, Chile has no good successors. Sanchez himself is 36 years old and cannot carry the team on his shoulders.
