(CLO) On October 18, Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group said the war with Israel was entering a new and more escalating phase, while Iran said "the spirit of resistance will be strengthened" after the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

Despite Western hopes for a ceasefire following Sinwar's death, the incident could further escalate tensions in the Middle East.

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said the US wanted to start talks on a proposal to achieve a ceasefire and secure the release of hostages, calling Sinwar a "major obstacle" to ending the conflict.

“That barrier has clearly been removed. It is not certain that whoever replaces Sinwar will agree to a ceasefire, but this event has removed the main barrier to achieving a ceasefire,” he said. In recent weeks, Sinwar had refused to negotiate.

Iran has given no indication that the killing of its leader will sway its support. “The spirit of resistance will be strengthened” after Sinwar’s death, its mission to the United Nations said.

Hezbollah also appeared defiant, declaring "a new and more escalating phase in the confrontation with Israel".

The Israeli military said on October 18 that it also killed Muhammad Hassin Ramal, a Hezbollah commander, in the Tayibe area of southern Lebanon.
