Golfer who escaped alcoholism rakes in money at first tournament of 2024 PGA Tour calendar

VnExpressVnExpress08/01/2024

Chris Kirk, a former alcoholic, earned nearly $13,700 per stroke when he won $3.6 million for winning The Sentry - the 2024 PGA Tour season opener in Hawaii.

Kirk lifted The Sentry Cup on the morning of January 8, Hanoi time, at the Plantation par-73 course on Maui Island. The tournament had four rounds, no cuts, and Kirk finished first with a score of -29 after shooting a total of 263 strokes.

Of the $20 million prize pool, Kirk’s share is 18 percent, or $3.6 million. With that kind of bonus, Kirk has achieved impressive numbers when calculating the earning efficiency corresponding to the workload at the event reserved for champions and the top 50 of last season’s FedEx Cup, a total of 59 golfers.

Accordingly, Kirk earned $13,688 per shot, $50,000 per hole, $900,000 per round. Throughout the tournament, the American golfer scored 30 birdies, only one bogey, at hole 3 of round 3.

And in Kirk's 263-stroke championship record, the most valuable shot came on the par-4 17th hole because it helped him close in on the championship. After his penultimate tee shot, Kirk was 209 yards from the target. At that time, he was in T1 with Sahith Theegala. This golfer was right in front of Kirk, missed the birdie on the 18th hole and finished -28. Meanwhile, Kirk was on the 17th hole, planning to use the 7-iron for his second shot. However, he switched to the 5-iron when he saw the wind was coming from the opposite direction and getting stronger. With that choice, Kirk hit the ball about 0.6 meters from the hole, from there making a birdie to take sole possession of the lead at -29.

This point, he turned into a winning mark thanks to keeping par on the par5 18th hole.

In May 2019, Kirk took a break from the PGA Tour to quit drinking and treat depression, and was successful after six months.
