Teaching Math with Music

“Want to add decimals quickly/Write the columns straight, remember to align the rows/The digits in the same place are arranged/Add like natural numbers and you'll get it right!/The commas are in the right row/Align the columns first - don't change anything/Learning math is so much fun/The results are accurate, the test is perfect!”. That is the poem about the topic of Adding Decimals that teacher Bui Thi Canh used ChatGPT to compose.

After having the lyrics, Ms. Canh continued to set commands for the Suno application to compose a children's song in a cheerful style, keeping the original lyrics. As a result, Ms. Canh had the song "Decimal Addition" to use in Math lessons (grade 5 curriculum). Thanks to this song, dry math formulas have become cheerful, easy-to-remember melodies, helping students learn Math in an exciting and effective way.

The above song is an example that teacher Canh has applied according to the ChatGPT and Suno Technology Application initiative to convert Math learning content into songs and funny poems, helping 5th grade students memorize knowledge effectively. This is an experience initiative that has been recognized at the city level (Dong Xoai city, former Binh Phuoc province).

Principal of Tan Phu Primary School (Binh Phuoc Ward) DUONG THANH LE commented: "Ms. Canh was born in 1974, belonging to the group of "old" teachers of the school. However, she is a pioneer in applying information technology in teaching. She is very enthusiastic, constantly creative, eager to learn to improve her expertise and skills to contribute to the causeof educational innovation. In her work as a homeroom teacher, she is trusted and loved by parents."

Teacher Canh shared about her idea: "Although technology has been widely applied in teaching, the combination of AI to convert academic knowledge into poetry and music has not been fully exploited. The breakthrough of this initiative lies in the simultaneous integration of two advanced AI technologies, ChatGPT and Suno. This helps teachers not to spend too much time composing but can still create vivid content, suitable for the psychology of primary school students."

These poems and songs are used by the teacher when starting the lesson to create an exciting atmosphere before starting the lesson. Sometimes, poems and songs are used in the knowledge consolidation section. In the new knowledge creation section, teachers can also let students sing after finding the formula or rule. For the "What can I do" lessons, teachers use songs or poems to organize games such as "Listen to the song - write the formula", "Read the poem - guess the rule"... These activities will help the lesson become more lively and attractive than the usual teaching method.

Continuous contributions

Not only limited to Math, this method can be completely applied to other subjects such as: Vietnamese (turning grammar rules into poems and songs), History - Geography (converting historical events and stories into songs to help students easily remember historical dates and figures), English (helping students learn vocabulary and sentence patterns through music).

Not only stopping at the ChatGPT and Suno application initiative, Ms. Canh also has many outstanding achievements in applying information technology to teaching. For example, in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, she has constantly researched and learned to design many online interactive lectures, videos on E-learning software, Canva to send to students for review and self-study. She also supports training teachers in the school to use online teaching software such as: Classroom, Google Meet, Azota...

In particular, her method of applying Mindmap to teaching has helped students learn quickly, remember for a long time and has been widely replicated throughout the school since the 2022-2023 school year, bringing high efficiency. She also won the first prize in the city-level E-learning electronic lecture and was recognized at the national level in the 2021-2022 school year, and participated in building lecture videos that were recognized at the provincial level.

During her career, Ms. Canh has achieved many noble titles and awards, including a Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister (school year 2023-2024).

In addition to her professional activities, Ms. Canh also supports the school in extracurricular activities such as: teaching school dance, staging art performances, and teaching Vietnamese to ethnic minority students who won first prize at the provincial level. As an active collaborator of the Children's House of Dong Xoai City (formerly Binh Phuoc Province), she established and supported the teaching of folk dance classes, bringing many high awards to the city.
