World gold prices increased slightly after a sharp drop in the US trading session (night of July 14). The precious metal increased by 6 USD to 3,349 USD/ounce. Previously, gold had fallen sharply from 3,373 USD per ounce to 3,340 USD.
Reuters on the evening of July 14 quoted US President Donald Trump as saying that the US would impose high tariffs on Russian goods if there was no agreement to end the conflict in Ukraine within the next 50 days, saying that "trade is great for settling wars".
The remarks came as Mr Trump hosted NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House. If no deal is reached within 50 days, the tariffs will be 100%. US President Donald Trump wants to use trade to pressure Russia into a deal to end the conflict with Ukraine, while Moscow blames Kyiv for not rushing to negotiate.
At high prices, gold has been under profit-taking pressure despite continued strong central bank buying. The World Gold Council (WGC) reported that global central banks bought a net 20 tonnes of gold in May, slightly below the 12-month average of 27 tonnes. Gold remains the main focus, with 95% of central banks expecting to increase their official gold reserves, up from 81% last year; 43% also plan to increase their gold holdings in the next 12 months, a record./.
