(CLO) Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, warned on Tuesday that Pyongyang could take actions in response to the increased US military presence in South Korea.

According to a statement published by North Korean state media, Kim Yo Jong condemned the US's deployment of the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier to South Korea along with joint US-South Korea military exercises this year, saying this demonstrated the "most hostile and confrontational will" toward North Korea.

"The DPRK is carefully examining options for further action to counter the US deployment of strategic weapons on the Korean peninsula, a bad habit that threatens our security," she said.

Experts say North Korea may test powerful missiles, including those capable of hitting the US mainland or US military bases in the region.

Responding to Kim Yo Jong's statement, the South Korean Defense Ministry affirmed that the country is ready to deal with any provocation from North Korea based on its strong military alliance with the United States.

Earlier on Sunday, the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group arrived in South Korea, marking the latest temporary deployment of US forces to demonstrate commitment to Seoul in the face of threats from Pyongyang.

The carrier's arrival comes just four days after North Korea conducted its fourth cruise missile test this year. Pyongyang views Washington's deployment of strategic military assets in South Korea as a major threat to its security and often responds with weapons tests.

Although Mr. Trump has proposed contacting Mr. Kim Jong Un, North Korea has not officially responded. Mr. Kim and Mr. Trump met three times in 2018-2019 to discuss North Korea's nuclear program. However, the talks broke down due to disagreements over US economic sanctions against Pyongyang.
