Uong Viet - the first person to play the role of Tang Monk in the 1986 version of Journey to the West - is one of the faces that left the most regrets with this classic role.
Although he only appeared in 4 episodes (including 1 pilot episode and 3 official episodes), his scholarly, dignified appearance and monastic demeanor are still deeply engraved in the memories of fans.
Wang Yue was born in 1955 and studied at the Beijing Film Academy in 1978, along with Zhang Fengyi and Zhang Tielin. In 1982, the late director Yang Jie went directly to the school to look for actors for Journey to the West and was impressed by Wang Yue's handsome, yet not effeminate appearance. After the meeting, she decided to choose him for the role of Tang Sanzang.
To prepare for the role, Uong Viet voluntarily shaved his head, wore monk's robes and lived at Phap Nguyen pagoda for a while to absorb the Buddhist spirit. This was rare for a young actor at that time, showing his dedication to the role.
In the three official episodes that Uong Viet participated in (episodes 6, 9 and 10), he portrayed a virtuous, virtuous, and emotional Tang Monk, especially the gullible quality - a characteristic of the original literary work. Although it was only the first stage of the film, his passionate acting and suitable appearance helped him gain high praise from the audience.
However, when the film crew had just started, Uong Viet suddenly decided to withdraw. In a later meeting with the crew, he said the reason was because he did not want to limit himself to a television role that would last for many years. Instead, he wanted to pursue his dream of becoming a movie star with more diverse roles.
After leaving Journey to the West, Wang Yue accepted many new film projects. However, unfortunately, no role could surpass the great shadow of Tang Monk. In the audience's memory, he is still the young and charismatic monk of the past. Although the decision to withdraw caused regret for both director Yang Jie and his fans, Wang Yue did not show any regrets but considered it a necessary turning point to develop his career.
Since 2004, he has left the screen and turned to teaching at the China Academy of Dramatic Arts. He was awarded the title of professor of directing and also participated in writing scripts for many TV series. The male artist has a private life, occasionally appearing in exchange programs or commemorative events.
At the age of 70, Uong Viet still maintains a stylish, healthy appearance and is passionate about artistic activities.
In 2020, he unexpectedly returned to the screen with the movie Miser (Miser) with three former "disciples": Liu Xiao Ling Tong, Ma De Hua and Liu Da Gang.
Although the film did not achieve the expected success, this reunion is still a meaningful souvenir for audiences who love the classic Journey to the West.
