VnExpressVnExpress23/03/2024

China Despite warnings of danger, a female tourist climbed Turtle Rock on top of Pai Ya Mountain in Shenzhen to take pictures and slipped and fell.

The incident occurred on March 18, on Pai Ya Mountain in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China. Some people accompanying the female tourist accidentally recorded the video and posted it on social media. In the video, the female tourist is seen swinging on a protruding rock at the top of the mountain to take a photo. While lowering herself to the ground, she slipped and fell, but was fortunately caught by a man accompanying her.

The owner of the video said that the female tourist was lucky to escape without serious injuries. The video was later also requested to be deleted and removed from the platforms.

Local authorities said they had not received any information requesting rescue at the time of the incident. There have been several similar incidents in recent years and the authorities have pledged to strengthen management, supervision and warnings to tourists about the dangers at the site.

To prevent similar incidents, warning signs have been put up along the way, loudspeakers have been used to remind people about safety issues, and personnel have been deployed to conduct regular checks. Checkpoints have been set up at the entrance to the mountain, and staff have been constantly informing visitors about the level of danger and reminding them not to violate safety when climbing.

However, many climbers still ignore the warnings and check in at the dangerous cliff. They still share photos or short videos on social media recording their adventurous swinging movements at Turtle Rock. This location is famous on social media, an angle that many people want to take pictures when climbing.

Pai Ya Mountain is a challenging target for many climbers in Shenzhen. The mountain is 707 meters above sea level, the sixth highest peak in Shenzhen and the most dangerous. The mountain is surrounded by the sea on three sides, and the rugged rock looks like rows of uneven teeth from the south. Turtle Rock is located on the mountainside, near the top of the mountain, and is a popular check-in spot, despite the danger warnings.

Many other destinations in China also have potential risks that tourists still ignore just to get a nice photo to post on social media. A cliff in Anyang, Henan , also has a rock protruding from the cliff that attracts many tourists to stand on and take pictures. To prevent accidents, local authorities banned photography at this location in mid-April 2023.

A lawyer told Beijing Youth Daily that if a tourist intentionally violates safety warnings and gets into an accident, the situation is considered self-inflicted risk. The tourist cannot claim compensation for damages. Tour guides who intentionally instruct tourists to perform dangerous acts and ignore protective measures may also be held legally liable for compensation for violations.
