On July 2, Bloomberg news agency quoted a statement from Germany's Siemens AG saying that the group had received notice from the US government about ending restrictions on exporting chip design software to China.
The US Commerce Department has notified Siemens, one of the world's leading suppliers of chip design software, that it no longer requires a government license to do business in China, Siemens said in a statement. It has also restored full access for its Chinese customers to its software and technology.
The U.S. Commerce Department did not respond to a request for comment. Two other leading suppliers of electronic design automation software, Cadence and Synopsys, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In May, the U.S. required several companies, including Siemens’ EDA unit, Cadence and Synopsys, to obtain licenses before exporting items such as design software and semiconductor chemicals to Chinese partners, in retaliation for China’s restrictions on exports of some critical rare earths.
Under terms agreed by the two sides last week, the US pledged to allow exports of chip design software as well as ethane and aircraft engines to China, provided that China fulfills its commitment to speed up approvals for rare earth exports./.
