Dong Nai attracts investment in seed production

In particular, the province has a large annual crop land fund of 165 thousand hectares and many other favorable conditions such as: suitable soil, a team of good farmers, many support mechanisms and policies to attract investors in the field of seedling production. Seeds made in Vietnam not only meet the needs of the domestic market but also export well to many countries in the world .

Farmers join hands with businesses to grow seedlings for seeds

The demand for vegetable varieties in the Vietnamese market is very large but still mainly depends on imports because domestic supply is limited. As an industrial province, Dong Nai has many advantages to attract many domestic corporations, enterprises and foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises to invest in the field of research and development of plant varieties. In particular, the model of enterprises and farmers cooperating to invest in seed production areas brings high economic efficiency.

Dak Lua is a remote commune, agricultural production conditions are more difficult than other localities. In particular, the model of growing seedlings for seeds has contributed to the economic development of the locality. The model of growing seedlings for seeds can produce 2 crops/year, farmers can earn hundreds of millions of VND/ha/year.

Mr. Dinh Van Quang, a farmer in Dak Lua commune, has boldly switched from growing rice and corn to growing seedlings for seeds such as bitter melon, squash, etc. According to Mr. Quang, growing seedlings for seeds is many times more economically efficient than growing rice and corn. A great advantage is that this model is invested in by the enterprise in the form of supporting materials such as seeds, fertilizers and product consumption for farmers. When harvesting, the enterprise buys the new products after deducting the investment costs. This is a great advantage because it reduces the burden of investment costs for farmers.

This source of seeds is not only supplied to the domestic market but also exported to many countries around the world.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Than commented: Although Dak Lua is a remote commune, it has many advantages for seed production, such as soil that is very suitable for growing seedlings for seeds, but more importantly, it is the people. This is a remote area, where farmers are very hard-working and committed to a production model for a long time. After many years of attachment, farmers have gained experience and farming techniques. The enterprise signs contracts with farmers who have land funds, providing seeds, materials, technical guidance and purchasing products for farmers at prices that ensure they have good profits. The market demand for seeds is still very large, so the enterprise continues to expand cooperation with farmers in many localities to expand the area of planting seedlings for seeds.

Accordingly, the agricultural sector is very interested in encouraging research and production of high-quality varieties. Dong Nai has many areas with favorable soil conditions for the production of plant varieties. In particular, the model of farmers cooperating with enterprises to produce seedlings for seeds is one of the models that brings high economic efficiency.

Create a mechanism to attract investors

Seeds are one of the most important factors determining the productivity and quality of crops. Therefore, Dong Nai pays great attention to promoting the restructuring of the agricultural sector in association with attracting investment in the field of research and production of high-quality plant varieties.

According to the representative of Nong Huu Seed Company Limited, Dong Nai has many advantages in terms of geographical location as well as climate and soil to invest in seed production models. A significant advantage is that the provincial and local authorities are very interested in and create favorable conditions for enterprises to invest in the field of seed research and production. In recent times, the enterprise has continuously diversified the types of seeds supplied to the market such as: seeds of leafy vegetables, fruit vegetables, tropical vegetables, temperate vegetables... Although the enterprise exports this product to many countries, the domestic market is still very rich in potential, so this is still the main market that the enterprise focuses on exploiting.

According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province has 3 agricultural seed research units, 16 seed production facilities and about 402 seed trading establishments. Seed management is of great concern. Regarding seed alone, the total seed output supplied to the market by the province is about 11 thousand tons/year.

In recent times, the agricultural sector has coordinated with institutes, schools, and centers to propose and order scientific and technological tasks on research, testing, application, and transfer of scientific and technological advances in varieties in the province; receive and transfer results of topics and projects on plant varieties.

Regarding seed production development, the province has also implemented many programs and projects to select and issue decisions to recognize parent trees, parent gardens of industrial trees, perennial fruit trees, etc. Many agricultural extension programs have been implemented in conjunction with trade promotion activities, exhibitions, and seed trading in and outside the province. Thanks to that, up to now, 100% of the newly planted and replanted areas in the province have used new and high-quality varieties.
