Since early morning, many households in Tran Phu village (Dong Tien commune) have followed the combine harvester to the fields to harvest rice. While busily transporting rice onto a tractor, Mr. Nguyen Van Tam (Tran Phu village, Dong Tien commune) said: "My family grows more than 2 hectares of rice, so we have to harvest early. The water in this area has basically receded, so we can bring the machine to the field to harvest." According to Mr. Nguyen Duc Cong - Vice Chairman of Dong Tien Commune People's Committee, this summer-autumn crop, the whole commune planted more than 700 hectares of rice, many areas were damaged by storms and rain. Currently, the locality has mobilized 23 harvesters, developed a plan to distribute them to villages to support people in harvesting; encouraged people to take advantage of the weather, go to the fields to harvest quickly, minimizing damage caused by prolonged flooding and damage. In Thach Lac commune, the post-storm harvest atmosphere is also very bustling. In Nam Thang village, 3 large harvesters are operating continuously, the basic drained areas are expected to be harvested in the next few days.
Ms. Tran Thi Lan (Nam Thang village, Thach Lac commune) shared: "The rice harvest time was hit by a storm, so the yield was somewhat reduced, but farmers are familiar with the risks of this crop, so they encouraged each other to go to the fields early to harvest on time, and to harvest as much as possible. I farm 6 sao, and I expect to harvest 3 sao today." In more difficult areas, even though the water has not completely receded, people still go to the fields to harvest by hand, trying to harvest as soon as possible. Mr. Nguyen Van Loi (Binh Tan village, Cam Binh commune) said: “My family has mobilized relatives and neighbors to harvest 6/9 sao. We have to take advantage of every hour to harvest on time, if we are late, the rice will sprout and we will lose everything. The water level is very high, now we can only harvest by hand, no machine can harvest.” It is known that the entire Binh Tan village (Cam Binh commune) produces 91 hectares of summer-autumn rice, of which about 20 hectares have fallen. These days, the village is mobilizing forces, encouraging people to focus on human resources and machinery to go to the fields, completely harvesting the ripe area, avoiding the situation of rice germinating, causing more serious damage.
Many rice fields across the province are still deeply flooded, causing harvest work to be delayed. Many farmers want to wait a few more days for the water to recede before they can go back to the fields. Ms. Tran Thi Huong (Yen Hoa commune) shared: “For now, the harvested rice is wet due to rain, so we have to dry it immediately. I still have 5 sao in the field but the water is too high, so we can’t harvest it yet. It’s very difficult to recover heavily flooded fields, so we’ll try to harvest the rice that can still stand. Farmers now just hope for more sunny days to finish this harvest.” In addition, farmers also focused on clearing the flow of water, creating conditions for water to quickly drain from the fields, helping machines to operate more smoothly.
According to the recommendations of the industry, after the storm, people need to proactively clear the flow, check the banks of canals and ditches, and ensure quick drainage. Particularly for rice fields that are in the flowering to green stage and have fallen, farmers should urgently rebuild them, bundle them into 4-5 bunches to limit damage and create conditions for later harvesting. For rice fields that have reached the harvest period (over 85% ripe), it is necessary to take advantage of favorable weather to harvest with the motto "green at home is better than ripe in the field".
