In the round of 16 of the ongoing Porto 3-cushion carom billiards World Cup, Dao Van Ly faced Spanish player Sergio Jimenez. The Vietnamese player was at an early disadvantage when his opponent launched long series to lead 11-2.
After that, Jimenez even deepened the gap to lead 25-5, 30-7... The more he played, the more he lost focus. Dao Van Ly tried to take advantage of the opportunity to catch up. But the gap was too big for him to close in time. Jimenez won 50-40, eliminating Vietnam's last hope at the Porto Billiards World Cup.
Previously, Dao Van Ly was also the only Vietnamese player to pass the group stage. Notably, he was one of the players who had to compete in the qualifying round, but surprisingly won a ticket to the round of 16.
Meanwhile, the group of strong players such as Tran Quyet Chien, Tran Thanh Luc, Bao Phuong Vinh and Chiem Hong Thai were not in good form and stopped early. Quyet Chien and Phuong Vinh were even in the same group, but no one could take one of the top two positions to continue.
The remaining player, Thon Viet Hoang Minh, was also one of the qualifiers like Dao Van Ly and also could not pass the group stage.
Up to now, the Porto Billiards World Cup has witnessed many surprises. Not only Vietnamese players, but also some of the world’s top players have been eliminated early. Among them are Dick Jasper, Sameh Sidhom, Heo Jung Han…
