Gabriel Heinze leaves head coach role to become Arteta's assistant/ |
Arsenal are set to sign Gabriel Heinze as a new assistant to Mikel Arteta, The Athletic reports, after senior assistant Carlos Cuesta left the club to take up the role of head coach at Parma.
At 47, Heinze, who played alongside Arteta at Paris Saint-Germain, brings a wealth of experience from his illustrious playing career. However, the former Argentina defender's move to the Gunners has still come as a surprise to many United fans.
Heinze played for MU from 2004 to 2007. In the 2004/05 season, the former Argentine defender played impressively and was Sir Alex's number one option for MU's left wing. Many "Red Devils" fans even consider him a club legend when he helped Manchester United win the 2006/07 Premier League.
In addition, the fact that Heinze, who has 7 years of experience coaching the first team in Argentina, agreed to be Arteta's assistant also shocked many people. Because, it is rare for a strategist to step back to assist someone else after a long period as head coach.
However, this appointment is not accidental. Heinze and Mikel Arteta were teammates at PSG in the 2000/01 season, when both were in the early stages of their careers.
This relationship, combined with Heinze's coaching experience at top Argentine clubs Vélez Sarsfield and Newell's Old Boys, makes him an ideal choice to become Arteta's "right-hand man" on the Arsenal coaching staff next season.
