Preliminary investigation shows that the video was posted by former inmate Cho Shie Jie

The Khmer Times reported on October 16 that Cambodia's Ministry of Interior is investigating the leak of a video showing prisoners drinking and singing karaoke in Prey Sar prison and PJ prison in Phnom Penh.
Interior Ministry spokesman Touch Sokhak said Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sar Sokha has directed senior officials at the ministry's Directorate of Prisons to investigate and monitor the recent social media video.
According to Mr. Sokhak, preliminary investigation showed that the video was filmed and posted on social media by a former prisoner who was released after completing his sentence.
Specifically, this former prisoner is Taiwanese Cho Shie Jie (44 years old) who was sentenced to 2 years in prison by the Phnom Penh Metropolitan Court for drug smuggling, after being arrested on May 24, 2022.
This prisoner was released from prison on May 24 after completing his sentence.
"So far, the inspection and investigation into the prisoners seen drinking alcohol and singing karaoke at Prey Sar prison and PJ prison has not been completed. When completed, the prisons department will make a public statement on whether the footage is new, old or fake," Mr. Sokhak said.
"However, we suspect this is an old video that authorities have recently investigated and processed, but has been reposted on social media," he added.
According to Mr. Sokhak, to combat all illegal acts in prisons, Deputy Prime Minister Sokha met with all senior officials of the General Department of Prisons on October 15 and directed to speed up the investigation process, check the leaked footage and conclude the investigation as soon as possible to find out the truth and inform the public.
