The painting was created by artist Joseph Inguimberty (1896 - 1971) in 1930. This is one of the famous works of the French romantic classical artist who lived, taught and created for 20 years in Vietnam.
Born in Marseille, his father was from Provence, his mother was from Franche-Comté, Joseph Inguimberty studied at the Marseille School of Fine Arts from the age of 14, hesitating between painting and architecture. In 1913, he was admitted to the National School of Decorative Arts, Paris. World War I broke out, he joined the army (1915) and was wounded (1917). After the war, he continued to study "decorative arts" in the studio of Eugène Morand.
Joseph Inguimberty was the first person to propose the idea of bringing “Son ta” to serve artists - a premise for the birth and development of Vietnamese lacquer painting. At the same time, through the training program at the Indochina College of Fine Arts, he was also the one who most fully imparted the art of oil painting to Vietnamese artists in the pre-revolutionary period.
During his 20 years in Vietnam, Joseph Inguimberty created many works that were appreciated by art lovers and people of the same sex, such as: Pond under the bamboo shade (1925), Pond under the sun (1927), Pond in the shade (1928), Women of the North (1929), Kim Lien girls (1929), In Kim Lien village (1933), Harvest (unknown year of painting), Fields (unknown year of painting), Going to the market (unknown year of painting)... "Scenes of daily life in Hai Phong Port" is one of Joseph Inguimberty's works that many people know. This is also the first painting he painted about Vietnam at Hai Phong Port.
In the art world, painting also mentions Joseph Inguimberty with his first love with nature, life and people of Hai Phong. Surely that is why the use of color to record the images of people's daily life in Hai Phong Port in 1930 is so close and familiar. On the warm color background of oil paint, a peaceful family with generations from the elderly to the young. In the background are boats anchored after trips to sea. The painting evokes a quiet, quiet atmosphere in a place that should be very noisy, as if wanting to send a message about the anchorage in each family. So it is not too much that in the art world, Joseph Inguimberty is called a master painter of intact landscapes. Because in his paintings, space and people seem to naturally enter the material on canvas.
