We, the younger generation, know him because he occasionally comes to the old office to attend meetings every Tet holiday or June 21 - Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day. Later, when he got old, he had difficulty walking, so every Tet holiday, as assigned, I, on behalf of the office, visited him, gave him the Tet newspaper, and a small gift of gratitude. He was very happy, especially when he received the Tet newspaper in his hand. He said that whenever he received the newspaper, he read it, and almost never missed an article. He read it because he liked it, and because it was fun.
According to the law of life, old age and weak health, he said goodbye to his children, grandchildren, and friends, living nearly a hundred years old.
This year, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Vietnamese Revolutionary Press, I again represented the agency to visit his home to offer incense in memory and gratitude. The house is now inherited and worshiped by one of his sons. The scenery in the living room is still the same as when he was alive, except for a large framed "painting" that is hung solemnly and easily catches everyone's eyes. The "painting" is a page of Mr. Le Niem's handwriting, in the lower left corner is a portrait of him diligently writing. His handwriting is not a formidable piece of writing or article, he only wrote a few words "Tell your children and grandchildren...". The old man's handwriting is shaky, but clear and coherent. He wrote:
“Tell your children…
Today, all of you have come to celebrate Dad's 96th birthday. Dad (grandpa, great-grandpa) wants to tell you, your grandson, your great-grandchildren… a few things about the family tradition. I hope you, your grandson, your great-grandchildren… will continue to carry it out.
1 - Grandparents and parents set an example .
2 - Husband and wife take fidelity as a moral duty.
3 - Children and grandchildren take filial piety as the top priority.
4 - Brothers and sisters, love is important.
...”
Handwritten by Mr. Le Niem. |
Just a few gentle lines, but that is the whole experience, the contemplation, the conclusion of a man nearly a century old. And thinking about it, just as he wished, in a family, if everyone lives up to their “role” and fulfills each “word” like that, that family will certainly be stable, happy, and without breakdown. And if every family is like that, then why should society worry about not being happy?
His son said that his handwriting and portrait were printed, framed, and every descendant in the family hung one of them… Without saying it, I understood that, to them, it was probably the most beautiful “painting”.
