Hard to get medals
The Vietnamese team left the tournament with 2 wins, 2 losses, and 7 points. The first ranking criteria of the SEA V.League is based on the number of wins and losses, then points. After the match with Indonesia on the afternoon of July 12, the Vietnamese team temporarily took the lead but no chance to improve their performance.
Meanwhile, because they still have to compete on July 13, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines all have a chance to improve their results. Therefore, the possibility of Vietnam being in the top 3 and winning a medal is quite slim. This makes many fans regretful, because the team's results could have been better if not for the disastrous loss on the opening day against the Philippines.
The Vietnamese men's volleyball team started the tournament with a poor performance and suffered a 0-3 defeat to the host Philippines. However, they gradually improved with each match, winning against Cambodia (3-0), Thailand (3-1) and losing to Indonesia (2-3).
Seeing the impressive performances against Thailand and Indonesia, many people wondered what made the Vietnamese men's volleyball team lose so easily to the Philippines? If they had won that match, they would have had a result of 3 wins, 1 loss and at least a bronze medal.
Signs of optimism
But anyway, the progress through each match is a positive sign. No one thought that after losing to the Philippines with so many mistakes, the Vietnamese team could stand up so strongly.
Coach Tran Dinh Tien has boldly changed, giving opportunities to new players. In the match against Indonesia, he let unfamiliar names like Phan Cong Duc, Nguyen Thanh Hai, Hoang Xuan Truong play more.
In the opposite setter position, he confidently assigned Pham Quoc Du - who was less prominent than Nguyen Van Quoc Duy or Pham Van Hiep. These new players had an extremely "hot" match, surprising Indonesia. Especially Quoc Du, who had 20 attack points, not Ngoc Thuan as usual.
It is a bit regrettable that the gap in skill level between the two teams is still quite large. Indonesia played better at crucial moments, taking advantage of opportunities better. That is something that the Vietnamese men's volleyball team has not been able to compare to its opponents.
After finishing stage 1, coach Tran Dinh Tien and his players will have about a week to rest and prepare for stage 2 in Indonesia. Hopefully this time the team has learned valuable lessons to at least win a medal.
