The current state of marine pollution in general and in Khanh Hoi commune in particular is a never-ending issue. Every day, the sea has to "endure" a large amount of waste, mostly plastic waste, household waste and animal carcasses. When the sea is rough, a lot of waste drifts ashore, causing air pollution and seriously affecting the living environment.

Ms. Huynh My Le, a resident who has lived on the coast for more than 30 years, shared: “Every time the sea is rough, a lot of garbage washes ashore, causing a foul smell, especially animal carcasses. We coastal residents are still conscious of throwing garbage in the right place, but the garbage from the sea washing ashore is out of control.”

Faced with the pollution situation, Khanh Hoi Commune People's Committee has coordinated with the Department of Fisheries, Border Guard Station and Youth Union members to organize campaigns to collect waste at the estuary and market areas. Activities such as distributing garbage bags, leaflets, and propagating awareness of protecting the marine environment... are regularly implemented to raise awareness among the people.

Mr. Quach Hoang Khai, Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, said: "Every year, the commune always coordinates with the Department of Fisheries to organize propaganda activities to raise awareness among fishermen about protecting the marine environment and classifying plastic waste. In addition, the commune coordinates with the Border Guard Station to organize "Sea Cleaning Day" activities and distribute garbage bags to fishermen. The situation of garbage at sea has improved significantly compared to before implementing propaganda activities."

However, according to Mr. Khai, this work still has many difficulties such as lack of means to collect waste at sea, no specific regulations for handling cases of littering at sea. Currently, the locality is using the budget of about 13 million VND per month to hire a garbage collection team, including health insurance and services. After collection, the garbage will be transported to the collection point and then taken to the treatment plant.

Ms. Ho My Le, 57 years old, a member of the Khanh Hoi commune waste collection team, shared: “The amount of waste here fluctuates around 35 large trash bins every day, sometimes more than 50 bins. For me, this job is hard but extremely meaningful, contributing to protecting the marine environment. I just hope that people will be more aware, practice throwing trash in the bins to keep the environment green, clean and beautiful.”

The commune’s youth union members are always the pioneers in marine environmental protection activities. The commune union has implemented many programs such as: “Green Sunday”, “Volunteer Saturday - Let’s clean up the sea”, organized branch meetings, launched clean-up campaigns, collected coastal waste and plastic waste.

Mr. Vo Phuc Nhi, Deputy Secretary of the Commune Youth Union, said: “We have organized more than 10 beach cleaning campaigns with the participation of hundreds of union members, students and people. Collecting and processing hundreds of kilograms of coastal waste each month. However, there are still difficulties such as: lack of funding, lack of protective equipment and unfavorable weather. In the coming time, the Commune Youth Union will continue to maintain and expand volunteer activities, strengthen propaganda work through videos , social networks, extracurricular activities and build Youth shock teams to respond quickly when pollution occurs"./.
