This is the first time in the history of the confrontation that Benfica has won against Bayern in an official tournament. Before that, the Portuguese team had a 49-year streak of only drawing and losing to their Bundesliga opponents.
The historic win sees Benfica reach the round of 16 as Group C winners of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup™ with seven points, one more than Bayern. The Portuguese runners-up will face Group D runners-up, most likely Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Bayern will face Flamengo. Fans are waiting for a dream scenario, when both PSG and Bayern qualify to create an attacking football party in the quarter-finals.

Having already secured their ticket to the next round, coach Vincent Kompany decided to rotate his squad, making eight changes from the previous match. This caused Bayern to start slowly and immediately face pressure from Benfica.
After less than 10 minutes, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had to show his talent to deny Angel Di Maria's shot. However, by the 28th minute, the German giants could not stand firm. In a clever combination on the left wing, Fredrik Aursnes crossed the ball reasonably for young talent Andreas Schjelderup to finish neatly past Neuer, opening the score.
Bayern's response in the rest of the first half was quite lackluster, not even having a single shot on target. After the break, Kompany sent on a series of pillars such as Harry Kane, Joshua Kimmich and Michael Olise in search of an equalizer. However, Benfica's defense, especially goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin, had a great day. The Ukrainian star repeatedly denied dangerous shots from Leroy Sane, Thomas Muller and Kimmich.
Bayern almost equalised when Kimmich fired home from outside the area, but the goal was ruled out by VAR after Kane blocked Trubin's view in an offside position. Meanwhile, Benfica almost doubled their lead if it weren't for Neuer's save from Kerem Akturkoglu.
Despite being under great pressure in the final minutes of the match, Benfica still steadfastly defended their fragile advantage to win a historic victory. This is the 16th consecutive unbeaten match of the Portuguese representative in all competitions.
