According to the 2025 high school graduation exam score distribution announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, 1,126,172 candidates took the Math exam and the average score achieved was 4.78. Meanwhile, the average score for Math in 2024 was 6.45.
The score distribution of the 2025 high school graduation exam in Mathematics is considered by many experts to be more balanced than in previous years.
Associate Professor Dr. Tran Dang Hung, Hanoi University of Industry, commented that the 2025 Math score distribution is relatively standard in terms of exam results. Nationwide, there were 513 exams with a score of 10, while in 2024, there were no exams with a score of 10.
Candidates said Math was difficult but there were still more than 500 exams with a score of 10. In 2024, there will be no score of 10.
The standard deviation in 2024 was 1.56 and this year it is 1.68. This reflects a wider spectrum and more differentiation in Math scores than last year.
According to Mr. Hung, if we compare the Math score distribution in the last 4 years (from 2022-2025), we can see that the score distribution shape of the previous 3 years is skewed towards the back (high score group). This year, the score distribution is more balanced.

Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc, Chairman of the Council of the University of Technology - VNU, said that the most encouraging thing is that the score distribution of Mathematics is differentiated. “There are years when the score distribution shows that the test is easy, so the score is high. This year, the test is more difficult than previous years. In 2024, when the Ministry of Education and Training announced the test set, we analyzed that the test would be more difficult, but at that time, candidates may not have noticed. Specifically, the test results in a lower average score than in previous years. Personally, I think the test meets the exam very well, with very clear differentiation. Differentiating the score distribution like this also helps to reshape the study of Mathematics at the high school level. This is a very important point for universities,” said Mr. Duc.
Comparison shows that the "skew" towards the high-scoring group has decreased in the Math score spectrum in 2025.
Mr. Duc said that candidates said this year's Math exam was difficult, but the score distribution showed that there were still more than 500 exams that achieved a score of 10, while last year no exam achieved this score.
Ms. Nguyen Boi Quynh, Principal of Viet Duc High School (Hanoi) also said that she was initially very worried about the exam results when there was public opinion about Math that "candidates could not do it". "But looking at the score distribution, I was also very happy. Because with Math, in the past, when taking multiple-choice tests, candidates could use some tricks and tips to calculate, even choose an option by calculating backwards. But with the exam format like in 2025, there is differentiation of each part of knowledge, requiring students to have good and solid knowledge to be able to do the test", Ms. Quynh said.
Candidates must have real thinking, reasoning and analysis to be able to do it.
According to Professor Thai Van Thanh, Director of the Nghe An Department of Education and Training, through analysis of the score distribution, compared with previous years, most subjects have a decreased average value, while the standard deviation has increased. "This shows that the test differentiation is very high, accurately assessing the actual capacity of teaching and learning," said Mr. Thanh.

Mr. Thanh added: "After finishing the Math exam, some candidates said it was difficult, but in fact, if we evaluate scientifically, the level of difficulty - ease is not based on feelings or emotions, but must be based on the assessment of the objectives, differentiation, reliability, and value of the multiple choice questions. In my opinion, the exam correctly assesses the required output standards and has high reliability. This value will help universities to be able to recruit quality candidates to meet the demand for high-quality human resources."
Mr. Thanh said that in fact, with the subject of Math, the Nghe An education sector also confirmed to parents, students, and teachers that the exam will be oriented towards assessing Math ability and applying knowledge to practice. "Therefore, it will be more difficult than the assessment based on the previous knowledge approach. This is the first time the exam is based on competency assessment, a modern method approaching international standards. Therefore, students may not be familiar with this and find it difficult. But through the results of the exam and the analysis of the score distribution, I am very happy and satisfied, because the score distribution is very good and accurately assesses the learners' abilities. From this result, we, as education managers in localities, will have innovations in directing teaching and learning in schools," Mr. Thanh said.
Dr. Quach Tuan Ngoc, former Director of the Department of Information Technology (Ministry of Education and Training), also agreed that the Math score distribution is relatively balanced, with the average score of candidates in the middle. "Every year, the Math test has all the questions in multiple-choice format, so candidates can 'blindly answer' and get points. But this year's Math test is not simply multiple-choice anymore, candidates must have real thinking, reasoning, and analysis to be able to do it," said Mr. Ngoc.
