1001 ways to cause traffic jams

Many people living near Ba Lat Bridge on Tran Van Giau Street (Vinh Loc Commune) still remember clearly the fight between two drivers. At that time, a large truck carrying scaffolding passed by and then cut in front of a small truck to enter Vinh Loc Street. Although there was no collision, the driver sitting in the large truck got out of the car, shouted and hit the small truck driver. Being attacked, the small truck driver fought back. The two sides fought for about 10 minutes before many people intervened and stopped. The fight not only caused traffic congestion in this area but also left a very ugly image.

Many roads in Ho Chi Minh City were jammed for hours.

On To Ky Street in Central My Tay Ward, a man riding a motorbike had a minor collision with two young men riding the same motorbike. Although the incident was not serious, the two young men chased the man and used their helmets to beat him up despite many people trying to stop them. The incident caused chaos and traffic congestion in the area. The victim's motorbike was left lying in the middle of the road.

On April 10, 2025, a specialized vehicle pulling a trailer suddenly lost a left wheel while traveling to the middle of Nguyen Van Cu Bridge. The incident caused serious traffic congestion from District 8, District 4 to District 1 (old). Nearby routes such as Ben Van Don, Tran Xuan Soan, and Duong Ba Trac were stuck in traffic for many hours. Many traffic participants said that the vehicle owner and driver did not check the vehicle's safety before traveling.

On the morning of May 9, 2025, a truck was traveling on Nguyen Van Bua Street from Ho Chi Minh City to Long An . When approaching the intersection of Nguyen Van Bua - Phan Van Hon, a car suddenly drove out of the parking lot and onto the road. The truck driver swerved to avoid the accident, causing the vehicle to run onto the sidewalk, hit an electric pole, and crushed the truck. The driver and assistant driver were lucky to escape, but the vehicle was severely damaged. The incident caused serious traffic congestion on Nguyen Van Bua Street. Thousands of vehicles lined up, lined up for many kilometers.

Traffic accidents also stem from poor traffic culture. In the first 6 months of 2025, Quang Trung Street in the old Go Vap District had 4 traffic accidents, killing 4 people. The causes of the accident were determined to be illegal parking (especially at intersections and three-way intersections), driving in the wrong direction, changing direction without observing, reckless overtaking, not keeping a safe distance, and not obeying traffic lights. Quang Trung Street from Go Vap intersection to Cho Cau Bridge is 5km long, 14m wide, divided into 4 lanes, with a median strip to separate two-way traffic, but the occurrence of such accidents shows that the awareness of traffic participants is not up to standard. However, residents in this area said that the cause is partly due to the lack of danger warning signs, "pay attention" signs, trees blocking the view, and traffic lights that are not consistent throughout... and Ho Chi Minh City is working to fix these concerns. This also falls under the category of traffic culture.

Good traffic culture will make the streets orderly and safe.

National Highway 1K, through Linh Xuan Ward (Ho Chi Minh City) has an intersection with Road No. 8. Traffic jams are common during rush hour and many accidents have occurred at this intersection. The reason why there are many vehicles entering Road No. 8 is because there are markets, supermarkets, schools of all levels in this area and through the dormitory of the National University. Although there are signs warning "pay attention and "go slow" on Highway 1K, trucks and container trucks passing through this area drive at quite high speeds, making this a rather dangerous area. Mr. Thanh, a local resident, said: "Every day, especially during rush hour, the number of motorbikes passing through this intersection is quite high, but cars of all kinds on Highway 1K drive at quite high speeds, posing a great risk of causing accidents... The most worrying thing is for students riding electric bikes, whose driving skills are not yet steady and steady." They have to compete to get through this intersection, just a small mistake can make them victims of the "evil spirit" of containers. More specifically, on the side of Highway 8, although there is a sign prohibiting vehicles from turning left during rush hour, most people do not comply, showing that the awareness of traffic participants is still very poor. Worse, there was a time when someone sprayed paint over this prohibition sign, also with the purpose of turning left during rush hour."

Nguyen Du Street, about 1km long, located in Binh Hoa Ward (Ho Chi Minh City), has been the site of many accidents and each time it causes traffic congestion. The cause was determined to be that this street is narrow but has a large volume of dump trucks, trucks and container trucks passing through. Drivers choose this route to avoid some neighboring streets that have posted prohibition signs according to the time of day. In addition, there are many car parking lots along Nguyen Du Street. During peak times, dump trucks, trucks and container trucks must park here and drive on Nguyen Du Street, causing traffic jams and potential traffic accidents. In the first months of 2025, there were 2 traffic accidents on Nguyen Du Street, killing 2 people, including a student.

Based on the above situation, the local authorities of the ward have proposed that the authorities put up signs prohibiting trucks, trailers and semi-trailers from circulating during rush hours and repainting and re-marking the blurred road lines. In addition, the traffic police force has increased patrolling, controlling and propagating, especially for truck drivers to comply with traffic safety regulations. "Thanks to these measures, since April 2025, there has been no more traffic accidents or prolonged congestion on Nguyen Du Street," said Colonel Nguyen Tien Thien, Deputy Head of Binh Hoa Ward Police.

Traffic culture has a positive and comprehensive impact on traffic participants, helping traffic participants to raise their awareness and directly influence their compliance with the Traffic Law; it is the driving force to promote awareness and actions to prevent dangerous behaviors for traffic participants. Traffic culture maintains and controls the awareness of respecting traffic participants, helping and giving way to children, the elderly, and the disabled during traffic participation. With these roles, traffic culture ensures that road traffic activities take place in an orderly and safe manner. Therefore, strengthening the construction of traffic culture in the community is currently an important and urgent task of all levels, sectors, agencies, units, socio- political organizations, unions, etc.
