On the evening of June 10, 2025, at the Bac Lieu Provincial Cultural Center, the opening ceremony of the Cambodian Cultural Week in Vietnam 2025 took place, chaired by Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam Hoang Dao Cuong and Secretary of State of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts of Cambodia Lundi Sannnara.
Attending the program were Mr. Huynh Quoc Viet, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Bac Lieu Provincial Party Committee; Mr. Ngo Vu Thang, Vice Chairman of the Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee, Ms. Tran Hai Van, Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and representatives of the Departments and Branches of Bac Lieu Province. Also attending were Venerable monks from 22 Khmer pagodas in Bac Lieu Province and many people and young generations of Bac Lieu Province.
In her opening speech, emphasizing the fine tradition and long-standing solidarity, friendship and cooperation in bilateral, multilateral, regional and international aspects between Vietnam and Cambodia, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts of Cambodia Lundi Sannnara affirmed that the peace of Cambodia today is the result of January 7, 1979 when Vietnam helped Cambodia escape the Pol Pot genocidal regime. According to Ms. Lundi Sannnara, promoting the tradition of cultural cooperation between the two countries, the Cambodian Cultural Week in Vietnam this time is like a new step in the history of organizing Cambodian cultural activities in Vietnam when the performances with many art forms were held for the first time in the two cities of Bac Lieu and Vinh Long, near the border of the two countries. These events create opportunities for Vietnamese people to broaden their vision of the country and people of Cambodia, contributing to bringing the people-to-people exchange and cooperation between the two countries to a new level.
In his welcoming speech, Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong affirmed that the Cambodian Cultural Week in Vietnam 2025 is a meaningful cultural event to celebrate the 58th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Cambodia, continuing to be an important milestone in Vietnam-Cambodia cooperation. Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong believes that during the tour in Bac Lieu and Vinh Long, the Cambodian delegation will have the opportunity to explore the cultural beauty, people and tourism potential of the localities. The cultural similarities of the two nations, the cultural exchange and cooperation programs of the two countries, which are regularly organized in terms of bilateral relations as well as within the framework of multilateral cooperation, will contribute to consolidating, enhancing and further developing the relationship of "good neighbors, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, long-term sustainability" between the two countries.
Speaking on behalf of Bac Lieu province at the opening ceremony, recalling the content of President Ho Chi Minh's telegram to King Norodom Sihanouk on the occasion of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Cambodia 58 years ago, Mr. Ngo Vu Thang, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, assessed that the organization of the Cultural Week of the two countries taking place in the form of annual rotation has promoted the role of a bridge, creating conditions for cultural exchange, enhancing mutual understanding between the people of Vietnam and Cambodia, especially the Khmer people. According to Mr. Ngo Vu Thang, the Khmer culture of the South shows a strong vitality and widespread spread. From language, writing, traditional New Year to festivals, folk dances, pentatonic music and traditional costumes, these unique cultural values in Bac Lieu are not only preserved but also appreciated and developed by the majority of people in the community of ethnic groups in Bac Lieu province. Emphasizing that Bac Lieu is one of the great cradles of the art of Southern amateur music, recognized by UNESCO as a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity, with many folk festivals imbued with traditional culture, creating a unique cultural blend of the three ethnic groups Kinh - Khmer - Hoa, with over 78,000 Khmer people, accounting for 7.6% of Bac Lieu's population, Mr. Ngo Vu Thang affirmed that Bac Lieu province wishes to continue organizing cultural and artistic exchange programs with Cambodia to further strengthen the friendship between Bac Lieu people, especially the Khmer people with the people of neighboring Cambodia.
The opening art program performed by Cambodian artists was warmly welcomed by the audience of Bac Lieu province, including many Khmer people and young audiences. In particular, the opening performance of the program left a deep and emotional impression on the audience with the dance "Friend", vividly recreating the story of the close relationship between Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and Cambodian people. Through the language of contemporary folk dance, the performance portrayed the sincere and devoted help of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers to the Cambodian people during the period of overcoming the Pol Pot genocide regime. Meanwhile, the songs praising the beauty of the country and people of Cambodia and Vietnam performed by Cambodian singers brought excitement and emotion to the audience. The whole hall enthusiastically clapped to the rhythm of the songs "Vietnam's heroic spirit" and "Singing forever the marching song" performed by Cambodian singer Kang Pharath, creating a lively and friendly atmosphere. The auditorium of Bac Lieu Provincial Cultural Center was full and the audience's enthusiastic applause after each traditional Cambodian dance performance such as Praying Mantis Dance, Ploy Souy Dance and Cambodian music and songs... helped the Vietnamese public and audience better understand the beauty of the culture of the country of pagodas.
Through mass media, this major cultural event was widely spread to the public, especially the Khmer people in the South, conveying the message that the Vietnam-Cambodia neighborly friendship is constantly being consolidated, enhanced and developed through cultural and artistic exchange activities, creating a stronger bond between the people of the two countries.
According to the plan, after the opening ceremony and activities in Bac Lieu province, the Cambodian Cultural Week will continue to be held in Vinh Long province. Along with the Cambodian art program, the performances of the Vinh Long art troupe will become a Vietnam-Cambodia cultural exchange event, creating conditions to introduce and promote the unique cultural features of each country; enhancing understanding, solidarity, contributing to strengthening solidarity and cooperation between the people of Vietnam and Cambodia./.
