The 2028 Summer Olympics are expected to be one of the most ambitious and diverse events ever. This will be the third time Los Angeles has hosted the event, following the 1932 and 1984 Olympics. It will also be the first time the California city has hosted the Paralympics.
LA28 announces preliminary competition schedule.
To celebrate this iconic milestone, LA28 has shared the first details of the competition schedule, designed with the goal of delivering a unique experience for athletes, and a global audience.
“We are incredibly excited to mark this moment. The schedule is designed to ensure the world’s best athletes are represented in Los Angeles. This milestone energizes us as we continue to focus on the work ahead,” said LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover.
After nearly 30 years, the Olympics return to the United States with a schedule designed to appeal to both domestic and international audiences. The schedule is built in close collaboration with many strategic partners, such as Olympic Broadcasting Services, the host broadcaster of the Games, and the international federations of each sport. The schedule has also been approved by the International Olympic Committee Executive Board, adding to its global legitimacy.
Highlights:
Opening and Closing Ceremonies: The opening ceremony will take place on Friday, July 14, 2028, hosted jointly between the LA Memorial Coliseum and Stadium 2028 in Inglewood, while the closing ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 30 at the LA Memorial Coliseum.
Historic switch between athletics and swimming: The 2028 Summer Olympics will kick off with a significant change thanks to a historic change in the order of the two events. Athletics will take place in the first week, while swimming will take place in the second week.
The Olympics will kick off with the world's fastest athletes competing at the LA Memorial Coliseum, and traditionally the marathon events take place in the final week.
The first medals of the Games: The medals will be awarded on Venice Beach, where the triathlon will open the medal table on the first day of competition, on the vibrant Los Angeles coast.
Day 15, the biggest medal day: part of the most memorable week in Olympic history, with 16 medals in team sports and finals in 19 individual sports, including swimming. This will be the busiest medal day of the Games.
Swimming Finals: Swimming will close the 28th Los Angeles Games on 16th with the final competition session in one of the most modern and advanced stadiums in the world, Stadium 2028, preparing for the closing ceremony at the LA Memorial Coliseum.
The 2028 Olympic schedule will continue to be adjusted as planning progresses.
The impact of the 2028 Olympics is already being felt in the Los Angeles community thanks to the PlayLA program, a joint initiative with the city’s Department of Recreation and Parks. With an investment of up to $160 million (€137 million), the proposal aims to boost sports participation for children and youth at all levels, and has just reached a major milestone: surpassing one million registrations.
PlayLA offers children ages 3 to 17 the opportunity to participate in over 40 sports, both Olympic and Paralympic, in an accessible and inclusive environment. Highlights include adaptive swimming, Paralympic surfing, adaptive athletics, boxing, judo, flag rugby and sitting volleyball, among others.
“As the Games unfold, we will highlight each neighborhood, so everyone can feel it together, and we will work to ensure that what is coming will leave a great legacy. We are already delivering on that legacy by announcing that more than one million registrations have been recorded at PlayLA. I want to thank LA28 and the International Olympic Committee for making these programs possible and for their tireless efforts to host the best Games in history,” said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.
In addition to the preliminary programme that has just been released, the Organising Committee has confirmed that a more precise version will be released later in 2025, including medal events and gender order of competition. The current schedule, organised by sport and date, can already be viewed on the official website of the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics.
