Jota was focused on recovering from a collapsed lung before his tragic accident. |
Respiratory physiotherapist Miguel Goncalves revealed that he worked with Jota just five hours before the accident. Jota was recovering from a collapsed lung, had been playing in pain and only had surgery after Portugal beat Spain in the Nations League final on June 9.
Goncalves said: "I said goodbye to Jota and Andre at around 8.30pm. They didn't party like some rumours, they just focused on their recovery. Diogo was completely serious, followed all the exercises and is almost fully recovered."
"When I left that day, he was almost pain-free. The base of his right lung had collapsed, but thanks to the post-operative therapy, everything was almost perfect. Diogo was very excited, completely confident in the recovery process. He even said he would not participate in the tour of Japan to focus on the best recovery, determined to have an explosive season with Liverpool," Goncalves added.
But just five hours later, Jota and his brother Andre Silva were involved in a tragic accident in Zamora, Spain. According to local media, the car had a tire blowout while overtaking another vehicle, killing both of them despite the rescue team arriving shortly after.
Jota and his brother are on their way back to Liverpool for pre-season training. They plan to stop in Burgos before continuing their journey to Santander and then catch a ferry to England. Jota's family will fly over later to join them in Liverpool.
Jota's sudden passing has shocked the football community. Cristiano Ronaldo, former coach Jurgen Klopp and many teammates such as Andrew Robertson sent emotional tributes, sharing the loss with the player's family.
