On June 23, the Ho Chi Minh City Investment and Trade Promotion Center (ITPC) in collaboration with the Ho Chi Minh City Food and Foodstuff Association organized a workshop on "Strategies and challenges for food and foodstuff enterprises when participating in the global market".

At the workshop, many businesses said that Vietnamese agricultural and food products have expanded their export markets to 180 countries and territories worldwide. Statistics for the first 6 months of the year show that the export turnover of agricultural, forestry, fishery and food products is estimated at more than 20 billion USD. Of which, many industries in this field have contributed more than 1 billion USD to the annual export turnover, especially some industries such as fishery (contributing more than 10 billion USD). Particularly for Ho Chi Minh City, the food and food industry is one of the 4 key industries prioritized for development of the city, accounting for 14% -15% of the total industrial production value of the city.

With technical barriers increasingly applied by many export markets, Vietnamese enterprises need to improve production quality towards the goal of sustainable import and export development for Vietnamese food products.

Along with expanding opportunities to develop export market share, domestic enterprises need to be more confident in the domestic market. Currently, the domestic market of Vietnam is also considered to be potential and safe not only for domestic enterprises but also for foreign enterprises.

However, in order for domestic enterprises to keep up with the general development trend of the market, as well as increase the ability to "join hands" with foreign enterprises to expand market share, it is necessary to proactively transform production towards greening and digitalization. In addition, it is necessary to overcome common shortcomings, such as unclear 5-year vision; lack of sustainable development strategy, low quality of human resources and low level of corporate governance.

“The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has issued a Program to support the development of enterprises and products in the food processing industry in Ho Chi Minh City for the period 2020-2030. This is considered one of the breakthrough programs for the city to focus on implementing support policies and mobilizing resources for investment and development,” emphasized the representative of ITPC.
