A sinkhole has just been discovered in Khi hamlet, Nhan Nghia commune, Lac Son district. A villager was using a harrow to till the land in Na Cay field when the machine suddenly stopped and the head of the machine fell under the field. Realizing the unusual phenomenon, the villagers checked and discovered a sinkhole under the field. This hole may have existed for a long time, but was only recently exposed due to the impact of the harrow.
Sinkhole in Khi hamlet, Nhan Nghia commune, Lac Son district.
The hole is about 1 meter in diameter and 2.5 meters deep. People used 5 meter long poles to wave around the hole but did not get stuck. The water in the hole was blue and occasionally stirred. People have cordoned off the area, set up warning signs, and are not allowing people to get close, especially children, to avoid risks.
Although sinkholes in Nhan Nghia commune have not occurred frequently in recent years, they still pose unpredictable risks. More than ten years ago, a deep sinkhole appeared in the rice field in Vo Giua hamlet and was repaired. About three years ago, a sinkhole also appeared right at the gate of a house, which was then filled in by people with dirt.
Sinkholes are called "vú răng" or "hồ răng" by the local Muong people - a hollow hole in the ground. This is a natural phenomenon that often occurs in mountainous areas and is difficult to detect in advance.
