Ho Chi Minh City: A 40-seat sleeper bus driver carrying people to An Giang to celebrate Tet was fined 12 million VND by traffic police for carrying one and a half times the number of passengers allowed.

On February 7 (December 28), An Suong Traffic Police Team, Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Police Department issued a fine of 12 million VND to the driver of a 40-seat passenger van carrying 64 people.

Yesterday morning, this car was carrying people from Binh Duong to An Giang. When passing through National Highway 1, in front of Quang Trung Software Park, the traffic police stopped the car for inspection and discovered that the car was carrying more than 24 people. Many people had to sit in a cramped space, with their luggage placed along the aisle in the middle of the car.

The driver said that due to the high number of passengers, the bus company wanted to earn more revenue so they carried more passengers. The traffic police then asked the transport company to arrange alternative vehicles to take the passengers back to their hometowns on the correct route.

According to Decree 100/2019, drivers (except buses) will be fined from 400,000 to 600,000 VND for each person exceeding the regulations, the total maximum fine does not exceed 40,000,000 VND for the following violations: carrying 2 or more people in a vehicle with up to 9 seats, carrying 3 or more people in a vehicle with 10 to 15 seats, carrying 4 or more people in a vehicle with 16 to 30 seats, carrying 5 or more people in a vehicle with over 30 seats.

The Traffic Police Department recommends that people should choose reputable bus companies when booking tickets and taking buses to go home for Tet; do not accept bus companies that overcrowd passengers or do not fulfill their contractual commitments when booking tickets to ensure safety for themselves and their loved ones.
