According to Portuguese media, Gyokeres is unlikely to return for his first pre-season training session at the Cristiano Ronaldo Academy. The Swedish striker believes the Portuguese club broke a secret agreement that would have allowed him to leave if a club paid £60m.
Sporting know they have a 'golden goose' on their hands and are determined to keep the asking price at least at £68.5m. The already tense relationship between Gyokeres and president Frederico Varandas has now become even more strained. However, Sporting are hopeful he will return to Lisbon and train with the rest of the squad on Monday.
Gyokeres has been given an extra summer break by the club. But Portuguese sources say he is likely to disappear. The striker is said to be extremely angry that Sporting did not keep their promise.
Sporting will only release the player if Arsenal pays 60 million pounds plus 8.6 million pounds in additional fees. Coach Mikel Arteta is in dire need of a new striker, and in addition to Gyokeres, there are also Sesko (RB Leipzig), Hugo Ekitike (Frankfurt) and Julian Alvarez (Atletico Madrid) on the target list.
The Gunners want to close the deal early to welcome a new number 9 for the tour from July 19. Meanwhile, the Martin Zubimendi deal has been completed for 51 million pounds and is only waiting for the Spanish midfielder to sign a contract within the next 36 hours.
