Vietnam officially has its 11th university.

The Prime Minister has just decided to change Can Tho University into Can Tho University. With this decision, Vietnam has 11 universities.

Today (July 15), the Government issued a Decision to convert Can Tho University into Can Tho University. The Decision takes effect from the date of signing.

Accordingly, Can Tho University is a publicuniversity under the Ministry of Education and Training, has legal status, its own seal and account, and is headquartered in Can Tho City.

Can Tho University reorganizes its organizational structure and operations on the basis of Can Tho University in accordance with the provisions of the Law on Higher Education and relevant legal provisions.

The Ministry of Education and Training, the People's Committee of Can Tho City and relevant agencies, according to their functions, tasks and authority, shall guide and supervise the conversion process to ensure transparency, prevent negativity, loss and waste of finance and assets; not affect the normal and continuous operation of the school; ensure the legitimate and legal rights and interests of learners, lecturers, managers, employees and related organizations and individuals according to the provisions of law.

The Decision also clearly states that the University Council, the Chairman of the University Council, and the Rector of Can Tho University continue to perform their functions, tasks, and powers according to current regulations until the Minister of Education and Training decides to establish the University Council, recognize the Chairman of the University Council, and recognize the Director of Can Tho University according to the provisions of law.

Can Tho University is training in 19 fields, with 121 undergraduate training programs, 59 graduate programs and 24 doctoral programs. The school's training scale is more than 47,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. Among the school's more than 1,000 staff and employees, 58.5% of lecturers have doctoral degrees, 24 professors and 182 associate professors.

Currently, Can Tho University has 6 member schools including: Polytechnic School, School of Information Technology and Communication, School of Economics, School of Agriculture, School of Education, School of Fisheries. In addition, the university also has 10 faculties, 3 research institutes and 1 Pedagogical Practice High School.

In the 2025 school year, Can Tho University plans to enroll 10,060 students, with 109 regular university training programs (89 general programs, 2 advanced programs, 13 high-quality programs). Of which, there are 8 new majors: information systems (high-quality program), preschool education, natural science pedagogy, automotive engineering, computer engineering (semiconductor circuit design), biomedical engineering, journalism, and tourism. At the postgraduate level, the school is training master's and doctoral degrees with over 1,500 students for the 2025-2026 school year.

In April, the Government decided to change Phenikaa University into Phenikaa University. With the decision to change Can Tho University into Can Tho University, Vietnam now has 11 universities. Specifically, they include: Hanoi National University, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Thai Nguyen University, Hue University, Da Nang University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, National Economics University, Duy Tan University, Phenikaa University and Can Tho University.
