Venice investigates strange colored streak on Grand Canal

VnExpressVnExpress29/05/2023

Italy Venice has launched an investigation after a green liquid appeared on its Grand Canal, with some suspecting it was caused by environmental groups.

"Today, residents living near the Rialto Bridge reported a green liquid appearing on the Grand Canal of Venice. Regional leaders held an emergency meeting with the police to investigate the origin of this liquid," the leader of the Veneto region, northeastern Italy, posted on Twitter on May 28.

A local government spokesman said he had taken water samples from the Grand Canal, examined surveillance camera footage and asked local boaters if they had seen anything unusual.

City council official Andrea Pegoraro accused environmental activists of being behind the incident. Ultima Generazione, the group that dumped diluted coal into Rome's Trevi Fountain last weekend, said it had nothing to do with the strange liquid in the Grand Canal.

This is not the first time the water in Venice's Grand Canal has changed color. In 1968, Argentine artist Nicolas Garcia Uriburu poured organic compounds and the dye Fluorescein into the canal to draw attention to ecological issues.
