Application of traceability technology: "Weapon" to prevent counterfeit and fake goods

(Dan Tri) - Tracing product origin using modern technology is considered the "key" to tightening management and protecting the market.

On the morning of July 8 in Hanoi, the National Data Association ( Ministry of Public Security ) organized the Workshop "Authentication of origin traceability - Driving force for sustainable development of Vietnam's Digital Economy".

The event aims to concretize the policies in Resolution 57-NQ/TW of the Politburo on digital transformation, consumer protection, promoting e-commerce and controlling product quality.

Counterfeit goods "hit" supermarkets and hospitals

Speaking at the workshop, Colonel Pham Minh Tien, representative of the National Data Center (Ministry of Public Security), emphasized: Counterfeit and fake goods are infiltrating from supermarkets to hospitals, causing many serious consequences. This is a big challenge for authorities, and at the same time erodes consumer confidence.

In just the first 5 months of 2025, national authorities have detected and handled more than 40,000 cases of smuggling, production and trading of counterfeit and poor quality goods, with a total value of violations reaching 6,500 billion VND. Alarming is the situation of counterfeiting food and pharmaceuticals, both of which directly affect people's health.

According to Colonel Tien, tracing the origin of goods is a prerequisite for controlling the market, fighting commercial fraud and building trust with consumers.

“From the perspective of state management of data, we see that the deployment of modern traceability platforms, applying advanced technologies such as blockchain, is an important solution to help improve management efficiency, ensure market safety and enhance transparency throughout the supply chain,” he said.

Notably, many of the current retrieval platforms are developed by Vietnamese technology engineers, suitable for the characteristics of the domestic market. The National Data Center is committed to accompanying and supporting in terms of technology, law and security so that these solutions can soon be standardized and connected to the national data infrastructure.

Traceability is the “digital passport” of the product.

Mr. Bui Ba Chinh, Acting Director of the National Barcode Center (Ministry of Science and Technology), said that counterfeit goods are currently divided into three main groups: fake brands, fake quality and fake origin.

In 2024, authorities handled 34,000 violations, including many typical cases such as fake drugs in Ho Chi Minh City, fake milk in Hanoi, fake cosmetics and electronic devices in the northern provinces.

Mr. Chinh said that the fundamental solution is to encrypt the identification of the entire production and distribution chain.

"Barcodes are part of a product's digital passport. Many countries such as the US, Canada, and Europe have implemented traceability from origin to export. Vietnam needs to soon complete a similar control mechanism, with extensive consumer supervision," he said.

Vietnam has issued 35 national standards (TCVN) on traceability. However, their application in practice is still limited, mainly fragmented, and has not penetrated the entire supply chain.

Businesses "single-handedly" fight against counterfeit goods

At the workshop, Mr. Hoang Tuan Anh, Director of Technology of ECO Pharma, shared: "The company has deployed traceability measures such as QR codes, but counterfeit goods are increasingly sophisticated, and there are always countermeasures. Businesses are forced to invest in many solutions, but lack guarantees from management agencies."

According to Mr. Tuan Anh, the cost of operating authentication platforms is a burden for businesses, while there is no unified authentication mechanism at the national level. "We want a common authentication platform, so customers can check product information right at the point of sale," he suggested.

At the conference, the National Data Association (NDA) introduced for the first time the NDA Trace platform - a comprehensive traceability solution developed by Vietnamese people, integrated on national platforms, applying modern technologies such as blockchain (NDA Chain) and decentralized identification (NDA DID).

NDA Trace enables identification of entire organizations, businesses, products, authentication of goods information and supply chain activities.

Each product will have a unique identification code, helping to track the entire journey from production to consumption. Every operation in the chain is recorded and authenticated, cannot be edited, cannot be counterfeited, ensuring absolute transparency.

Mr. Nguyen Huy - Head of Technology Department, National Data Association, said that traceability is not a new concept, but in Vietnam there is a lack of a consistent mechanism.

“Currently, each business does things differently, there are no unified standards, they are not connected with each other and even less connected internationally. There needs to be a comprehensive policy, applied nationally, from the central to local levels.

In the context of the whole country implementing digital transformation and digitalizing the economy, the application of technology for traceability is mandatory and must be a comprehensive policy from top to bottom, with synchronous management from the central to local levels and applied to all businesses, only then can we identify, authenticate and trace the origin of goods," said Mr. Huy.
