How big is Ukraine's Black Sea Fleet's estimated loss?

Ukraine's military intelligence agency (HUR) announced on May 10 that its Magura V5 unmanned boats had caused an estimated $500 million in damage to the Russian Navy's Black Sea Fleet.

The Kyiv Post quoted HUR spokesman Andriy Yusov as saying that the Magura V5 is "Ukraine's main and best weapon" to target the Black Sea Fleet. Yusov also stressed that the Magura unmanned boat is being improved in "all aspects".

Ukraine has repeatedly used drone boats to attack the Russian Navy, and recent footage released by Russian state sources shows Ukraine has modified the Magura V5 to carry anti-aircraft missiles.

There is no information yet on Russia's reaction to HUR's new statement.

HUR’s estimate of the damage comes days after Kyiv released a video showing Ukrainian forces taking down Russian high-speed landing craft anchored in Uzka Bay in Crimea. Ukraine said it carried out the attack using Magura boats.

Magura boats were also used to attack Russia's newest patrol boat, the Sergey Kotov, in an attack in March. The Sergey Kotov costs about $65 million and can carry a crew of 80, according to Unia news agency.

President Zelensky: Ukraine is ready to confront Russia in Kharkiv

In recent months, Ukraine has stepped up attacks on Russian military targets in the Crimean peninsula. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the more than two-year war with Moscow would not end until the entire territory, including Crimea, was returned to Kyiv’s control. Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.

Meanwhile, satellite imagery reviewed by the British Ministry of Defense last month showed that Russia “very likely” upgraded its Black Sea Fleet following the Ukrainian attacks, according to Newsweek . The investments include building Moscow’s logistics, maintenance and support system for weapons systems at Russia’s Novorossiysk facility, just east of Crimea.
