The South China Morning Post reported on July 2 that Russia has just established a state-funded center to study Xi Jinping Thought, the first center outside China to study this ideology.
The Research Laboratory for the Study of Modern Chinese Thought was opened by the Russian Academy of Sciences in June at the Institute of Contemporary China and Asia (ICCA) in Moscow, aiming to "better understand modern China".
This is the first center abroad to study the Chinese leader's political ideology, also known as Xi Jinping Thought, according to Xinhua.
ICCA Director Kirill Babaev said the research center wants to conduct an in-depth and objective analysis of the ideas and concepts that contributed to the formation of the modern Chinese state.
“Such analysis will allow the Russian government , business and scientific community to better understand modern China, to build more accurate strategies and forecasts for Russia-China relations,” he said.
According to him, the new center will focus on five areas of modern Chinese thought, including economic policy; domestic and legislative policy; foreign policy and international relations; defense and security; and ecology and society.
Leading Chinese researchers at other Russian centers will also participate.
“We also emphasize that the research lab will not receive any external funding and will be funded only by our institute, in order to keep the work free from any ideological pressure,” Babaev said.
China has established at least 18 research institutes devoted to Xi Jinping Thought, which was enshrined in the country's constitution in 2017.
