More than 9,000 pots of Tet flowers sold at Binh Dong wharf were purchased by the Department of Tourism and District 8 to support, sharing some of the difficulties with the sellers, limiting the scene of destroying unsold flowers.
Binh Dong wharf spring flower market located along Tau Hu - Ben Nghe canal (District 8) this year has about 600 gardeners from the Western provinces coming to do business and display products for Tet.
To increase sales for small traders, Ho Chi Minh City is piloting the purchase of Tet flowers for the first time, helping to speed up the consumption of goods. Over the past three days, the Department of Tourism and the authorities of District 8 have organized many purchasing campaigns with more than 9,000 flower pots, ornamental plants, etc.
On the 30th of Tet (February 9), Binh Dong wharf is bustling with boats carrying Tet flowers and trading activities. Along Tau Hu - Ben Nghe canal, the flower market is divided into many areas with apricot flowers, chrysanthemums, bougainvillea, kumquat... priced from a few hundred thousand dong to several million dong.
Many stalls reduced prices by nearly half compared to yesterday (29th of Tet), but the quantity of goods at some places is still large, packed along the road.
According to the city's Department of Tourism, the flowers are purchased at stalls, including many types. Flowers and ornamental plants after being purchased are used to decorate the spring flower street of love at Binh Dong wharf, creating space and landscape for people and tourists to enjoy during Tet.
Mr. Nguyen Huu An, Deputy Head of the Department of Planning and Development of Tourism Resources (white shirt), Department of Tourism, said that the total cost of buying flowers, transporting, designing Ben Binh Dong flower street... is about 600 million VND, from socialized sources.
The city organized this activity for the first time to share difficulties with people and limit the situation of destroying unsold flowers. If this method is effective, the Department of Tourism will expand it to other areas from next year.
Each stall was purchased by the local Department of Tourism in coordination with the government, with a few dozen flower pots and ornamental plants. "After negotiating the price, I sold more than 20 chrysanthemum pots to the government, each pot for nearly 100,000 VND," said Ms. Phuong, a trader from Dong Thap who came to Binh Dong wharf to sell during Tet. She said that the city's support in buying flowers helped her goods sell faster, reducing some of the worry about unsold flowers during Tet.
The remaining amount of flowers and ornamental plants purchased after being used for the spring flower street is brought by District 8 to wards and neighborhoods, and distributed to disadvantaged families in the area to decorate for Tet.
On the last day of the price reduction, most customers bought many flower pots and had to rent motorbikes or three-wheeled vehicles to take them home.
Binh Dong Wharf is a famous place in Ho Chi Minh City with the image of "on the wharf, under the boat", especially during Tet when traders from the Western provinces such as Ben Tre , Dong Thap... come to do business.

For many years, on December 30, markets often saw unsold flowers, so vendors destroyed them and had them cleared away by garbage trucks, because they did not want to be forced to sell at low prices.
