Doctor Roberto Kalil said on television that the 79-year-old president fell and suffered a serious injury to the back of his head, requiring stitches and a slight brain hemorrhage in the temporal region.

"This condition requires repeated checks throughout the week. Theoretically, the brain hemorrhage could worsen in the following days so monitoring is important," said Dr. Kalil, adding that Mr. Lula was fine and able to perform normal activities.

According to a report released by Sirio Libanes Hospital in the capital Brasilia on October 20, the Brazilian President suffered a laceration to the occipital region at the back of his head on October 19. The leader was advised to avoid long-distance air travel but was still able to perform his normal duties.

MP Gleisi Hoffmann, chairman of President Lula's Workers' Party, said he had spoken to the leader and he was in good health, but had to avoid long trips.

Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira has been appointed to lead the Brazilian delegation to the BRICS summit, which will take place from October 22-24 in the Russian city of Kazan. Founded in 2006 with four members – Brazil, Russia, India and China – the group has since added South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the UAE.
