Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is recovering in intensive care after undergoing emergency surgery in Sao Paulo for a brain hemorrhage.

According to Reuters citing doctors, President Lula da Silva (79 years old) is currently in stable condition, can talk and eat normally after a successful surgery at Sirio-Libanes Hospital (Sao Paulo state, Brazil).

Lula da Silva will remain in intensive care for the next 48 hours and will remain in hospital until next week. Doctors have ruled out any brain injury or neurological complications. If all goes well, the South American leader will be discharged.

President Lula da Silva was rushed to hospital on December 9 after feeling unwell and suffering from headaches. Doctors performed an MRI scan and discovered he had suffered a brain hemorrhage, the result of an accident at his home on October 19 when he fell in the bathroom. The incident has raised further concerns about the health of the elderly Brazilian president.

President Lula da Silva received several stitches to his head and has been restricted from traveling since the accident. The leader was also forced to cancel a trip to Russia to attend the BRICS summit. He also did not attend the COP29 UN climate change summit in Azerbaijan.

Tests in early November showed that Lula da Silva's condition was stable, and he traveled to Montevideo last weekend to attend the Mercosur summit.

"I wish President Lula a speedy recovery. I hope he will soon return to work to continue leading the activities of the government , which are extremely important for the country at this time," Brazilian Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco said in a statement.
