At the Galaxy Unfold event in New York on the morning of July 9 (local time), Samsung launched three foldable phones and two watches. Including the high-end foldable phone Galaxy Z Fold7 worth $ 1,999 , with a 6.5-inch secondary screen that can be expanded into an 8-inch main screen.

In addition to announcing a major improvement in the thinness of its foldable phones, Samsung also highlighted its efforts in AI strategy. Like many other companies, Samsung is trying to determine how the AI revolution will reshape its business and entire industries.

AI Development Strategy

At the event, Samsung said that they see AI as the core of all products and services, not just a supporting tool. Known for its smartphones and home appliances, the brand now wants to put AI at the center.

“AI is what redefines your entire interaction with your device,” said TM Roh, President and CEO of Samsung’s Mobile Experience Business. Features like Live Translate, Interpreter, Note Assist, Photo Assist, Gemini AI, etc. are all integrated directly into the One UI 8 operating system, making it as easy to use as the original version.

Companion devices will also become more important as AI develops. These include devices Samsung already sells, such as smartwatches and fitness rings, as well as devices in development, such as Android XR glasses. Samsung executive vice president Jay Kim said that surrounding devices that work with phones will make AI more natural in everyday life.

That takes advantage of Samsung’s position as one of the world’s most diverse and comprehensive electronics companies. But the company says fully tapping into the potential of AI will be a long-term endeavor. “It will take years to get there, but we’ve started early and are making good progress,” Kim said.

In addition, the company also developed a “Hybrid AI” model to balance between processing tasks directly on the device or in the cloud. Through this, Samsung cooperates closely with partners such as Google Gemini, Qualcomm, Adobe, Microsoft, to equip optimal services.

Axios analyzed that to build and expand this strategy, Samsung needs to answer two questions. One is which AI features will be provided by Samsung itself, and which will rely on partners, when for general cloud AI features, the company largely relies on Google Gemini.

Second, like rival Apple, Samsung needs to make a decision about what parts of its AI should be handled on-device and what parts should be handled in the cloud. On-device AI has advantages in terms of cost, latency, and privacy, but is limited in processing power and battery life, leading to more complex tasks being handled in the cloud.

One of Samsung's early on-device AI efforts was the Now Brief feature, a daily personalized update that includes your schedule, traffic information, health data, and access to music and video recommendations based on your preferences.

Samsung is working with Google to develop AI-integrated smart glasses, as well as Project Moohan, mixed reality glasses similar to Apple Vision Pro.

Charge for AI services?

At its Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung clarified rumors that it has no plans to charge for certain Galaxy AI features, but it’s entirely possible that the company will charge for them.

Many argue that AI models are energy-intensive and expensive to operate. They think that while AI companies have already rolled out charging packages, Samsung will soon follow suit.

However, Samsung has made it clear that Galaxy AI features will continue to be free for a while, which is in line with Samsung's original commitment to keep the Galaxy AI service free until 2025.

For now, features like Live Translate in calls and Generative Edit in the Photos app are still free to users. Samsung may decide to lock some features behind a paywall in the future, according to 9to5Google.

At Unpacked, Samsung made a clear distinction between “default” features and other features. However, it’s still unclear what tools the company considers “worth paying for.”
