Previously, on August 26, Vice President of the European Commission and Trade Commissioner of the European Union (EU) Valdis Dombrovskis called on Russia to restore the Black Sea Grain Initiative.
Mr. Dombrovskis stressed that Russia's restrictions on the transportation of Ukrainian grain across the Black Sea are creating many problems, not only for Kiev but also for many developing countries.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers' Meeting in India, Mr. Dombrovskis affirmed: "We support all efforts of the United Nations and Turkey regarding the agreement.
The EU is now providing alternative trade routes, known as “solidarity routes”, to Ukraine for exports of grain and other commodities.
Since the expiration of the Black Sea grain agreement, about 45 million tons of grain, oilseeds and related products have been exported via alternative routes through Poland and Romania, providing an important lifeline for Ukraine, he noted.
In addition to agricultural products, EU solidarity routes also help Ukraine export more than 36 million tons of other goods, such as iron ore, steel, soil and timber, generating 33 billion euros ($35.64 billion) in income for Ukrainian farmers and businesses.
