People who drink a lot of coffee have a 40% lower risk of developing Parkinson's disease than people who don't drink coffee.

Results found that coffee consumers had a lower risk of Parkinson's disease than non-coffee drinkers.

After measuring the blood levels of the major caffeine metabolites paraxanthine and theophylline in people with Parkinson's disease, the authors found that there was a link between coffee consumption and the risk of developing Parkinson's disease.

Specifically, people who drink a lot of coffee have a 40% lower risk of Parkinson's disease than people who do not drink coffee, according to Science Alert magazine.

Among those who drank coffee, the risk reduction ranged from 5 to 63%, depending on the country.

The study, one of the largest in the world in 20 years, demonstrated an inverse association between caffeinated coffee consumption and Parkinson's disease risk, the researchers wrote.

This isn't the first study to look at coffee's effects on Parkinson's disease, but it goes deeper than others in looking at biomarkers of caffeine intake years before Parkinson's is diagnosed.

Parkinson's disease is a dreaded disease in old age.

Researchers explain that it appears that caffeine and its components have brain-protective properties.

Previous studies have shown that the reason coffee works this miracle is because caffeine activates the secretion of the "happy hormone" dopamine in the brain. Parkinson's disease is characterized by a decrease in dopamine, due to the loss of nerve cells in the gray matter.

Elucidating the effects of caffeine on Parkinson's disease is not only of public health importance, but also increases understanding of the etiology of Parkinson's disease and promotes potential prevention strategies.

According to the Mayo Clinic (USA), it is best to drink about 4 cups of coffee per day, no more than 4 cups at most.
