Thailand scored a goal that lacked fair play, Coach Ishii coldly said: 'Wasn't that goal beautiful?'

Coach Masatada Ishii affirmed that Supachok Sarachat's goal against Vietnam in the AFF Cup 2024 final on the evening of January 5 was a 'beautiful goal' of the Thai team.

Thailand team behaved badly

The Thai team lost to Vietnam in the second leg of the 2024 AFF Cup final. Coach Masatada Ishii's students conceded a goal in the 8th minute after Tuan Hai scored, then scored 2 goals in a row thanks to Benjamin Davies and Supachok Sarachat.

However, the resilient efforts helped the Vietnamese team to have an emotional comeback. Two goals from Tuan Hai and Hai Long brought coach Kim Sang-sik and his team back to the Southeast Asian throne after 6 years of waiting.

When asked about Supachok Sarachat's controversial goal against Vietnam (raising the score to 2-1), which stemmed from Thailand's lack of fair play when Supachok chose to shoot immediately instead of returning the ball after the collision, Mr. Ishii answered briefly: "That goal was beautiful, wasn't it!? That's how it was for me."

After Supachok scored an unfair goal, referee Ko Hyung-jin suggested that the Thai team let Vietnam score a goal in return to show their fighting spirit. But Mr. Ishii's Thailand said no.

After the match, coach Ishii shared his sadness when the Thai team was no longer on the AFF Cup throne: "The Vietnamese team played better and deserved to win the championship. Thailand made mistakes in the first minutes of the match, and those moments changed the match. We are not allowed to repeat this mistake.

Thailand is transferring forces, with many players coming from the younger generation. They cannot win the championship, but in any case, the runner-up position is not a bad result for the players, because it is a preparation for the future."

In response to a Thai reporter's question about the risk of being fired after the AFF Cup, Mr. Ishii affirmed that he "only focuses on his work".

Regarding the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers that will start in March, Mr. Ishii briefly shared: "We are waiting for the next national team training session. Thailand will play the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers and it is good that this is a tournament within the framework of FIFA Days. Therefore, I can call up players who are playing in Thai League 1 and Thai League 2 to the national team. Although we could not win the AFF Cup, the players have worked hard together and shown positive signs. Thailand will return easily with the resources we have.

Thank you to the players for their efforts, thank you to the fans for always supporting the team. We will try to come back, improve every day and become an even better team."
