The film revolves around an urban family, where expectations of success and social norms have unintentionally become a pressure that weighs heavily on each generation. A series of tragicomic events take place on the mother's birthday, which should normally be a warm reunion, but has now become a "battlefield" for long-accumulated conflicts. However, these conflicts open up opportunities for each member to speak up, face each other and themselves after many years of hiding.
The film brings together many famous artists such as Meritorious Artist Huu Chau, Huy Khanh, artist Ai Nhu, Thanh Hoi, Be Sam, Hoang Phi, singer Ngoc Son... The film also marks the return of artist Hong Anh in a movie role after a period of absence.
Artist Ai Nhu plays the role of Mrs. Tam, the mother of Y Duc's mother (Tran Kim Hai). As a veteran of the southern drama stage, artist Ai Nhu has left an impression on audiences for over 30 years with hundreds of diverse and emotional roles. This is the first time artist Ai Nhu has participated in a role in a movie, with the image of a woman who has gone through many losses, lives with resignation but always loves her children with all her affection and silent sacrifice.
Along with artist Ai Nhu, veteran artist Thanh Hoi also appeared on the big screen for the first time after a long time working in the theater with the role of Sac Lo Tinh. In the poster, Mr. Tinh appeared with a very sad image: wearing a black vest with a flower on his left chest, bowing his head sadly - completely opposite to Mrs. Tam's outfit and facial expression.
Tran Kim Hai is a face that has been noticed since two episodes (Face Off 6: The Fateful Ticket) and Sau Tam (Face Off 7: A Wish). In this film, Tran Kim Hai transforms into a completely new character - Y Duc of "Pha Dang: Mother's Birthday". This is also Tran Kim Hai's first leading role on the big screen.
Reuniting with Tran Kim Hai in this project is Tin Nguyen in the role of Hao - a completely new character compared to the young actress's previous roles. Tin Nguyen also made his mark with his first roles such as Tu Tham (Flip Side 7: A Wish) and Mui (Detective Kien: Headless Case), both of which were fresh and energetic. However, in "Pha Dang: Mother's Birthday", Tin Nguyen has a different image: messy hair, sad, and full of thoughts.
In contrast to Y Duc's worries, the character Quang Tai, played by Samuel An, has a mature, relaxed, and confident demeanor in a white blouse. Tai evokes the image of a successful, wealthy person, successful in family life and work. However, Tai's forced, tired eyes and the sad colors of the poster seem to be secretly hiding some hidden corner behind this fulfillment.
The character of Aunt Ba, played by artist Hong Anh, brings a radiant and outstanding look from her fresh face, eye-catching makeup, colorful outfit to the cake in her hand, all of which seem to reflect a part of her personality: cheerful, generous but unpredictable in her mood.
An (little Sam) is the youngest and also the most innocent. Wearing a school uniform and a cute headband, An smiles mischievously but seems to be unaware of the atmosphere that is covering the whole family. This is the first time Little Sam tries his hand at acting, after passing the casting round with many other child stars.
Following the participation of the “old tree of the theater village” Thanh Hoi is Meritorious Artist Huu Chau - a veteran name of the stage and television, who is always loved by the audience for his delicate and emotional acting. With his extensive experience and flexible transformation ability, artist Huu Chau will certainly bring profound and humane scenes, contributing to the emotional depth of the film.
Released in the Vu Lan season of 2025, the movie “Pha dang: Sinh nhat me” promises to bring Vietnamese movie lovers a journey of deep emotions, revolving around maternal love and close relationships. This will be an ideal choice for Vietnamese families, and at the same time a subtle reminder of understanding, sharing, and sympathy between individuals in the family.
The film is scheduled to premiere on September 12 in theaters nationwide, distributed by Galaxy Studio.
