Coach Amorim wants to build a squad with experienced leaders. He has long admired Martinez, who has been named the best goalkeeper in the world by FIFA twice in the last 3 years. Argentine media confirmed that MU is speeding up negotiations to bring the 2022 World Cup champion to Old Trafford.
A source told The Sun : "Emiliano is close to Lisandro Martinez in the Argentina national team and is keen on a move to United. He has turned down several other lucrative offers just to wait for this opportunity. Amorim also wanted to sign Martinez in 2020 when he was still in charge of Sporting."
Amorim is rebuilding the Red Devils for the new season, having signed striker Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m, and now wants to complete a deal for Martinez.
Martinez has four years left on his Aston Villa contract, which is worth £150,000 a week, but an offer of around £40m would be enough to convince Villa to meet UEFA's financial regulations.
