The attraction of Hung Yen newspapers

For the past few months, I have formed a habit. Every Saturday morning, I turn on my computer. With just a few simple steps, I can access Hung Yen Newspaper. From hot news about the land and people where I was born and raised, to poems and essays on the culture and arts pages published every Saturday. All of these have become part of my regular routine.

In the scope of this short article, I would like to mention only a small category, which is some essays and poems published in Hung Yen weekend newspaper.

Most of the writers in the newspaper, I have known and read. But strangely, when reading in the mainstream newspaper, I find it to be more serious and mature. Perhaps it is because of the habit of being strict on each page of writing and strict even with my reading that I feel that way.

As a teacher who has been away from the podium for many years, Nguyen Thi Huong is full of pride when her now successful students come back to visit her. That well-deserved pride bursts into poetry with the typical words of a brilliant summer:

The sun plays in the tree canopy

Royal poinciana flowers light up the sky

Cicadas chirp in May

Welcome back to visit old school

(May)

Also a teacher but still standing on the podium, once while taking his students to visit Tong Tran temple, Nguyen Van Song asked the question:

Real name and real family in real life

Or is it an old saying?

Now I am not sure, but at my age and above, not only people in Hung Yen but also many other places know the poem "Tong Tran Cuc Hoa". Yet this is the first time I have heard author Nguyen Van Song raise such a question. Asked but Nguyen Van Song did not answer directly, but brought up an event in the story that not only aroused but also enriched the ability to associate of each student.

From here I realized that, whether it is a real person or a character in a story, virtue, filial piety and loyalty are the ones that deserve to be honored.

In the same issue of June 7, 2025, author Hai Trieu with "The season of heavy rice flowers" and author Tran Van Loi with "Remembering the time of exchanging labor for harvest" both bring us back to the memories of a time when rice grains were valued for the wealth of each family.

In the “Family and Society” section of the May 31, 2025 issue, I paid special attention to the article “Children grow up, parents suddenly feel… lonely” by author Huong Giang. The author did not avoid the current phenomenon of moral degradation. The article is like a wake-up call for those who only know how to strive, only know how to get rich but do not understand the loneliness of elderly parents who only want warm moments with their children and grandchildren.

“Everyone has a good reason for being busy. But is it worth it to trade time with our parents who have devoted their whole lives to us. Just because…!”

I paused for a long time trying to find what the author intended to say behind the words “just because…”, but found it unnecessary because the author himself had tactfully hidden it. What was not said was also quite clear before my eyes.

Only then do we know that literature does not praise, educate , or criticize directly, but when read, absorbed, and understood, it has the power to anchor firmly in the hearts of each of us.

I do not intend to analyze each specific essay or poem, I just want to give some evidence to show that to have better quality essays and poems, the editorial board in particular and the members of the newspaper in general must be diligent and serious, so that those essays and poems can reach the readers, of which I am a member among hundreds, thousands of readers.

Hopefully the newspaper will continue to have more rich and meaningful articles.
