- In Huu Lung district, there are currently 7 enterprises and 65 establishments processing forest products. Since May 2025, due to difficulties in consuming peeled wood products, many forest product processing establishments, especially peeled wood production establishments in Huu Lung district, have been operating at a low level due to a 30-40% decrease in consumption compared to the beginning of 2025.
In the first 4 months of 2025, on average, Thao Dinh plywood production facility (Ca Ngoai village, Minh Son commune, Huu Lung district) produced and consumed over 350 m3/month per month, but from May until now, Thao Dinh factory has only consumed about 200 m3/month.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thao, owner of Thao Dinh plywood production facility, shared that in 2024 and the first 4 months of 2025, the consumption of her family's plywood products was favorable. However, from May 2025 until now, the consumption of products has slowed down significantly. Currently, the family only produces sparingly because if they produce a lot and cannot sell, the products will get moldy and then they will just be thrown away.
Through the reporter's investigation, in addition to Thao Dinh plywood production facility, the plywood output consumed from May 2025 to present of most plywood production facilities in Huu Lung has decreased quite sharply.
Mr. Nguyen Quoc Huy, owner of a plywood production facility in Ca Ngoai village, Minh Son commune, said: In previous years, at this time, my family's facility consumed an average of 200 - 300 m3 per month, but now the consumption output is only over 150 m3. Currently, the facility has to reduce workers and only produces when there are orders, not daring to import as many raw materials for production as in March and April 2025.
According to Ms. Thao, Mr. Huy and some other owners of peeled plywood production facilities in Huu Lung district, 100% of the peeled plywood output of these facilities is sold to purchasing businesses for export to the Chinese market.
Through research, we learned that the output of peeled plywood purchased by businesses has decreased over the past 2 months because Chinese businesses have reduced the amount of imported peeled plywood, so Vietnamese businesses have also reduced imports from private production facilities.
Moreover, recently, the selling price of peeled plywood has also decreased compared to the beginning of 2025. The current selling price is 1.2 - 1.4 million VND/m3, while at the beginning of the year it was 1.8 - 1.9 million VND/m3.
While consumption output and selling prices have decreased, plywood production facilities in Huu Lung are currently facing increased production costs. Specifically, the current labor cost per day has increased by more than VND50,000 compared to last year (about VND250,000 - 270,000/person/day) and the price of gasoline has also increased.
Talking with leaders of some enterprises such as: Thanh An Service and Trade Development Company Limited (Ca Trong village, Minh Son commune, Huu Lung district), Thanh An Lang Son Forestry Products Company Limited (Tan Thanh village, Dong Tan commune, Huu Lung district), Huong Son Wood Group Company Limited (Ben Luong village, Minh Son commune, Huu Lung district, Great Wood Joint Stock Company (Tan Thanh village, Dong Tan commune, Huu Lung district), we know that, recently, new tax policies abroad (the US increased import tax percentage on Vietnamese goods), along with economic conflicts in countries in the region , as well as changes in import policies of wood and wood products, especially wood chip products and Chinese peeled board products... have greatly affected the activities of enterprises operating in the production, trading, and export of interior and exterior furniture, especially enterprises producing and exporting industrial boards across the country. Due to difficulties in exporting industrial plywood, businesses have reduced the output of imported plywood from plywood manufacturing facilities in the area. As a result, the output of plywood from private plywood manufacturing facilities in Huu Lung district has decreased sharply.
The reality of the consumption of wood products, especially plywood products of private production establishments in Huu Lung district in recent years shows that most private plywood production establishments are small-scale, operate seasonally, produce raw output products with low economic value, have unstable consumption markets, and mainly depend on orders from purchasing enterprises for export to China. When China tightened management measures on wood and wood products, private plywood production establishments encountered difficulties.
Regarding this issue, Ms. Tran Hoai Trang, Head of the Economic - Infrastructure and Urban Department of Huu Lung district, said: In order to solve the current difficulties for plywood production facilities, implementing the direction of the district leaders, the department has been connecting a number of large forest product processing enterprises in a number of other localities to promote the consumption of plywood products, thereby initially helping to boost the consumption of plywood production facilities. In addition, the department also organizes instructions for production facilities on implementing linkages between production facilities, between production facilities and large domestic wood production enterprises to ensure stable product consumption while increasing the value of plywood products produced.
According to the leader of the Economic - Infrastructure and Urban Department of the district, in the long term, to solve the problem of stable consumption of peeled plywood, there is no other way, peeled plywood production facilities must upgrade their production scale by investing in machinery systems, applying new technology to peeled plywood production to produce quality products. At the same time, it is necessary to diversify both domestic and export consumption markets so as not to depend on one market...
Huu Lung is a district that not only has the largest number of forest product production and processing establishments (mainly plywood production) compared to other districts in Lang Son province, but also has great potential for developing the forest product processing industry. However, currently, production establishments in the district are mainly "each doing their own thing", lacking linkage in production and consumption, causing local forest product processing activities to not be commensurate with the potential and to operate unstablely due to frequent difficulties in product consumption.
In order for forest product processing activities in Huu Lung district to develop sustainably, production facilities must proactively invest and upgrade machinery systems, and proactively build a linkage chain in forest product processing and production, thereby ensuring stable consumption and increasing the value of peeled wood products.
