Vietnamese horror films dominate box office

After 3 consecutive weeks at the top of the box office chart, "Doraemon" sadly dropped to number 2, when the Vietnamese horror film "Under the Lake" rose to the top; the gap between the two films was quite close.

According to statistics from the independent box office website Box Office Vietnam, in 3 days, from June 6 to 8, Under the Lake earned more than 14.2 billion VND in revenue with 173,359 tickets sold and 6,324 screenings.

This number is enough for director Tran Huu Tan's film to surpass Doraemon Movie 44: Nobita and the Adventures in the Picture World with revenue of nearly 13.7 billion VND, 140,771 tickets sold and 4,970 screenings.

The film, which celebrates 45 years since the first film about the famous robot cat from the land of the rising sun, has grossed over 140 billion VND, continuing its impressive streak of achievements.

Despite leading the box office in its opening weekend, The Bottom of the Lake ’s revenue did not really explode as expected. Promoted as the first film to exploit the theme of duality, and inspired by the famous urban legend - the death stone lake, this work also received many mixed opinions about its quality.

"Under the Lake" exploits a new story of the horror genre but still has some flaws.

On the one hand, the film is considered to bring a new breeze to the horror film genre thanks to its approach and exploitation of the story about the confrontation between the original and the copy - between the past and the present. However, the film follows in the footsteps of many Vietnamese films in general due to the flaws in the script, especially the over-composition that makes some storylines not fully exploited.

Last week, the Vietnamese box office did not really explode.

Ranked number 3 on the box office chart is Mission Impossible 8: Final Retribution with an additional 7.5 billion VND in revenue. Up to now, the film has achieved a total revenue of more than 36 billion VND.

Notably, the domestic animated film De Men: Adventure to the Swamp Village continued to maintain its popularity with a revenue of nearly 4.8 billion VND, bringing the total revenue to more than 15 billion VND - a number that can be considered a success for Vietnamese animation.

Notably, last week, the film surpassed the live action Lilo & Stitch and pushed it down to number 5 on the box office chart. Lilo & Stitch currently has a total revenue of nearly 29 billion VND.

Last week, a famous brand also released a new movie called John Wick: Ballerina from Space , but it only achieved modest revenue, more than 3.1 billion VND.

This week, the Vietnamese box office promises to heat up with the appearance of a series of impressive works.

Notably, the live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon is returning.

Also in the comedy, action, and myth genres, we must mention the Super 5. The horror genre continues to dominate the box office with the release of 3 new works: The Demonic Tape, The Slasher , and The Ghost . The two animated films Colorful Stage! A Miku Who Can't Sing and Dan Dan Dan: Evil Eye also bring more choices to the audience.

In particular, this week the next Vietnamese animated film - Trang Quynh nhi: The Legend of Kim Nguu will have early screenings on June 14 and 15 before officially opening on June 20.
