The accident occurred on the afternoon of January 12 and there were 425 people working underground at the time. Of them, 380 people were evacuated while the rest were safe, according to Xinhua.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident was caused by a coal and gas explosion. Search and rescue efforts are continuing. Authorities have detained the mine managers.

China's mining industry has been plagued by accidents in recent years. In 2022, 245 people died in 168 mining accidents, according to official figures from AFP.

In December 2023, an accident occurred at a mine on the outskirts of Jixi City in Heilongjiang Province, northeastern China, killing 12 people and injuring 13 others.

A month earlier, 11 people died in a coal mine accident in another province, Heilongjiang. In September of the same year, at least 16 people died in a coal mine fire in Guizhou province in southwestern China.
