Before the merger, Ho Chi Minh City had 3 affiliated higher education institutions: Ho Chi Minh City Academy of Officials, Saigon University, and Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine.
After the merger, Ho Chi Minh City has one more affiliated university: Thu Dau Mot University. Previously, Thu Dau Mot University was under the People's Committee of Binh Duong province.
