On the afternoon of October 6, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize went to Ms. Narges Mohammadi (51 years old, photo), an Iranian journalist and activist.

According to the Nobel Committee, Ms. Narges Mohammadi has worked for women's rights in Iran, promoting human rights and freedom for all. The award ceremony will take place at Oslo City Hall on December 10.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner will receive a medal, a diploma and a prize of 11 million Swedish kronor ($986,000). However, Ms Mohammadi is unlikely to attend the award ceremony as she is serving a prison sentence in Tehran’s Evin prison.

This year’s Nobel Peace Prize has 351 candidates, including 259 individuals and 92 organizations. This is the second-highest number of candidates in the history of the prize and the eighth consecutive year that the number of candidates has exceeded 300. The current record is 2016, when there were 376 candidates. Ms. Mohammadi is the 19th woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
